My mom doesnt have but she has diverticulitis. I don't blame her in any way shape or form for "possibly" giving me this HORRIBLE disease. Yes it's horrible, but it can be managed. And by the time your kids are old enough they may find out more about it to make it MORE manageable. I really think it has A LOT to do with DIET. I'm in the process now of trying to go gluten free and get my family on the gluten free wagon too. Also-don't feed your kids crap. Eat as many fruits and vegetables as humanly possibly and as much whole organic foods as you can. I think this has some part in all of this mess. Good luck-and being a mommy is the best job you will ever have, so do it if you can and want to. So many people aren't as blessed to be able.

just stumbled on this post. I certainly wouldn't let that stop you from having a family. My son was diagnosed with Chrons at age 13, now 14 and neither my spouse or I have it. I have a sister however who was diagnosed in her 40's. So, I said all that to say, we don't know who will, and who will not develop Chrons. My other two children have no sign of CD. What an ignorant statement that nurse made to you. I enjoy my son immensely and can't imagine not having him around. CD does not define him, and so far, he is responding very well to treatment.

Also, as you've noticed from the post, I think a cure, or at least a more bullet proof med is in the near horizon.

I am 32 years old and was diagnosed with Crohn's about a week after I turned 30. I found out my great aunt has it, but not as severe as I do. I have NEVER, EVER been interested in having children, but I just recently had surgery to have my colon removed. My perspective has definitely changed and I'm now making sure I recover, get back to a healthy weight and get off all the meds so my husband and I can have children.

There are three factors that cause Crohn's disease and genetics is just one of them. If the doctors were 100% sure that it was genetics I'm sure we would be much farther along with identifying it before you get pregnant and having better medications and/or a cure.

If you are not planning on getting pregnant in the near future I would just concentrate on getting and staying healthy. Good luck!
