I have never been able to take a supplementary fiber because of the problems you noted. I do try to eat foods that naturally contain fiber, like oatmeal (gluten-free), sweet potatoes, brown rice, fresh fruits and vegetables. Since going gluten free whole wheat is not a possibility, but I used to eat whole-grain bread.
Great advice, and even tho this isnt a supplement but actual food, try looking into chia seeds. Full of nutrition and fibers to help clean up your system. Start off slow because you'll probably get gassy first acouple weeks since your body most likely isn't used to fiber.
