Ohhh yes! They are definitely connected. GERD was actually my first symptom of Crohn's, years before I had any digestive problems. I had to have at least three surgeries to remove strictures in my esophagus. I take 40 mg of omeprazole each day and that helps keep it down. Stress can make it worse, just like it can make everything else with Crohn's worse. I'm sorry, good luck!

I've had chronic gastritis also, and also esophageal strictures. Recently though my upper GI has been fine. Seems random, which makes me think it's all the Crohn's. Sorry that you're suffering, prof.

You can adopt the same dietary and lifestyle changes that everyone with GERD should do, and that should help some. Be sure to keep the coffee, tea and wine drinking to a minimum, if not zero.

I have had GERD 9 years before I was diagnosed w Crohn's. My reflux can be under control only if I take the daily 80 mg of Nexium. I also take the anti-ulcer drug. When gastritis gets worse, I take either Zantac tabs or karafate. When I was on pred, I used to have a lot of flare ups which necessitated daily Zofran injections or even iv fluids and injections.
If you are new to this, call your GI and ask about his/her opinion. Reflux can be cured at the beginning. This is my 14th year w aGERD and my GI told me that it has become too late to treat it completely; it has become chronic.

I've used Tums here and there for acute pain, but it isn't something you want to take a lot of, since it does contain calcium and calcium can be constipating. My daughter finds Maalox more effective for her; I think that one has magnesium in it.

Elevating the head of your bed is a very effective technique of keeping the acid down. You might also experiment with the time of day that you take the ppi.

Are there any side effects from Karafate? I read that constipation is a side effect...
Lousy night... reflux.. burning throat then in the bathroom from my Cd all night. Is there such a thing as a complete GI transplant???
