Hello:
I was wondering if anyone can let me know if my son who is taking 6mp comes in close contact with a person who is currently is being treated for shingles? We are having visitors to the area next week and I was wondering if he should avoid contact? I know that he cannot live in a glass house but I don't want to put him in close contact with any virus if he can avoid it.
Thanks for any input.

Shingles is not contagious, but people who are not immune to varicella can get chicken pox from a person with an active shingles outbreak. Of course, if that person is being treated and their blisters are covered or gone, I would say the risk is extremely small.
Your son has had a varicella vaccine, I assume. How old is he, and did he get all the proper boosters? You might want to talk to his pediatrician about
testing his immunity to varicella.

Don't know about
6mp, but a child on pred can come down with Chicken pox even after being vaccinated--happened to my son.

Kazbern:
My son is 17 and all his shots are up to date. He has never had chickenpox, it was my understanding that shingles are contagious and that there could be a slight risk of developing chickenpox if you come in contact with someone with shingles if you did not have chickenpox previously.
Thank you so much for your reply, I think that I will call his pediatrician like you suggested just to be on the safe side.

Big Betty:
Thank you for getting back to me, I guess I would not be so worried if it wasn't for the risk of his immune system been compromised due to taking the 6mp. Just one more thing to worry about

Shingles are not contagious.
Shingles is an outbreak of the chickenpox varicella
in a person who has previously had chickenpox.

I am on 6MP and my dad had the shingles. I had no problem being around him.

Ah, yes. Shingles is not contagious - BUT - medical personnel will tell you they do NOT want you around persons who are pregnant or immune-system-compromised. So - make of that what you will. The above is information/instruction I was given when I developed shingles. I was on Imuran w/no problems but when we added a low dose 6 week taper of Entocort - voila! I broke w/shingles at the end of the taper.
