I asked my company if they would donate to the local CCFA walk or to my walking.  Oh gee we have already used most of our funds this year...and remember you can not solicit donations from co-workers that is against HR rules.

I go to lunch today and there is a table of people collecting a 50/50 raffle and looking for support for the breast cancer walk.  You can't go to get a drink without having to walk past them.  Don't get me wrong, I understand the horrors of breast cancer and don't begrudge the need for funds.  But really....

Not angry just disappointed that a company that touts diversity and community wellness allows for such disparity in policy.

Once again the "poopy" disease gets the bums rush (all puns intended to the fullest extent allowed smilewinkgrin )

You would think that since there are so many people with Crohn's, there would be lots of research and awareness for the disease, but it's clearly not the case.  Guess it's a good thing my family donates to CCFA on my behalf.

It's not killing enough this disease. That is why it's labeled chronic. If you have no life and you're suffering, it's within acceptable parameters according to diseases standards.

Part of the problem, too, is that nobody likes to talk about it. It's such an embarrassing disease that I'm sure there are tons of people who are just living with the symptoms because they are too afraid of what people will think when they find out they've got it.

It isn't a sexy disease, after all.

Oh God, I think so too. I mean, at 17 years old, I experienced less problematic and less severe symptoms that were still troublesome in my book. If I had spoken up about them sooner, who knows -- but don't care to think that way. =/

Mabye it's because IBD isn't a terminal illness...I'm just glad there are companies out there supporting IBD...M&M foods does a crohn's BBQ every year...Theron Fluery does an annual gold charity for CD every year as well (since his has it afterall).

On the celebrity scale of diseases, Crohn's doesn't even make it to D-list. It's E-list. If we're lucky.

They have used this years allotment. Okay, so find out how to apply for a donation from next years allotment.
It is true that certain conditions have more cache then others but I know that the agency I worked for for 12 years you would not be able to get them to do a donation out of this years budget for anything-it all had to be worked into the next years budget and then there was a process.

LOL mtgman...what disease is "sexy"? If it's not terminal then it doesn't get as much attention is all...I can appreciate that fact but it doesn't make it any easier to live with a chronic illness that for the most part is so dibilitating and restrictive. I think chronice illnesses like ours deserve great attention too....maybe the more people that become inflicted with it, the sooner that will change when it comes to being on the bottom of the "list".

sjkly - it's not the used up allotment where I have the problem.  I blame the chick in charge of our local walk for not contacting them sooner like I pushed.

I blame my company for the extra remark reminding me I can not fundraise and ask for walk donations in the office, then it was OK for others to do it.

mtgman - sexy will never follow the phrase I have Crohns hehehehe.  Saucy may work though

pb4 - agree with you.  I always thought we needed a better word than chronic.  For some reason the word just sounds whiny to me.  I am going with dum dede dum....Omnipresent disease.  It wears a cape that drags around behind you, doesn't let you have a sidekick and your superhero tool belt is full of meds and baby wipes!

you know what i mean...and i mean it in a way only someone suffering with a chronic disease can...not in a bad, demeaning etc. way...but like breast cancer- people jump up and down all day long to raise money, show support and get involved...ain't going to happen with crohn's! maybe we can get the toilet paper manufacturers to sponser a poop-a-thon! YES that's it!!!!!!!!!

Folks, it's not just that IBD is rarely fatal- it's that, while it may seem common to us, it just isnt common in comparison with things like heart disease and breast cancer- not even remotely close. So we are the ugly ducklings.
