My story is like Laurie's. I went to see a GI in March of 2000, 3 months after the birth of my first child, because of rectal bleeding. He told me I had IBS. After a year, no kidding, he did a sigmoidscope and told me I had proctitis. He treated me with a steroidal foam. Then I got pregnant with my 2nd child. I had a great pregnancy with no rectal bleeding, but after that birth I flared again and went to see another GI.
We worked on upper GI issues and he waited until my baby was 30 months old to do a full scope. So that was 2004. At that point he noted that I had inflammation at the rectum & cecum. A few months later I switched meds from Asacol to Pentasa and felt a lot better.
