I have had a Power port and numerous PICCs. I have the same issues with over-used veins. Previous posters have defined the main benefits and limitations of Ports/PICC. They can become infected and,in the worse case scenario, cause significant health issues. I have had an infected Port and many a PICC , but fortunately, the symptoms were minimal, and another one was eventually inserted.
We have only four (total) 'comfortable' sites for PICC/Ports on our arms, and a couple of less comfortable sites elsewhere on our bodies. Hospital ER's, Urgent Care Centers, and office staff generally (in my limited experience), have seen more PICCs than Ports. Only a Registered RN is allowed to draw blood from
a PICC (I assume it's the same regarding Ports). I am currently receiving TPN (two months) with a PICC and expect (like yourself) to be using a PICC for reintroduction of Remicade in the next few weeks. Professionals tell me it's easier to remove a PICC quickly that a port, for whatever that's worth, wink!
