I was just recently diagnosed with a platelet disorder called ITP ontop of already being diagnosed with Crohn's disease.

Does anyone else have ITP?  Do you have any tips or tricks to help alleviate either of them?

I started Rituxin infusions to help bring up my platelet levels and it worked for a little while but now they are right back down to where they shoulnd't be.  In the meantime, I'm in the midst of a pretty bad flare.

I don't know anything about ITP, but I know with some Crohn's patients you can have malabsorption of key nutrients and end up with a clotting factor disorder.

I was diagnosed with ITP in 2010, and just got diagnosed with Crohn's. Not sure how to help either of them really as my abdominal pain continues. My doctor has me on a gluten free diet to see if it helps. So far it hasn't. (3 weeks on the diet.) The ITP I manage with N-plate injections, but my platelets do get low between injections and have caused some problems at times. Any ideas why my Crohn's isn't getting any better? I'm on Apriso (since January), as well as Nexium and budesonide.

Hi Autumnsky. Sorry you are not feeling better yet! What dose of Apriso and budesonide are you on and what are your symptoms?

I am down to 6 mg of budesonide and four .375GM capsules daily of Apriso. The budesonide wasn't helping, so we are tapering the dose. My main symptom is stomach pain after I eat. The pain varies from immediately after I eat to 30 min later and is usually just above my navel. It lasts for hours. The doctor found lots of inflammation in my stomach and esophagus (found during an endoscopy and colononsopy) and spotty inflammation in my small bowel (found during a pill camera test). I also have alternating days with diarrhea then constipation. I've been on Nexium since December to help with the inflammation in my stomach and esophagus. A CT scan of my abdomen showed nothing unusual came up. Blood tests showed some inflammation markers were up, but my last blood test a few weeks ago showed nothing.

If you don't have inflammation in the colon, then Apriso isn't going to do anything. Same with budesonide and the terminal ileum. You've already figured out that the budesonide isn't helping. The remaining question is how to treat the inflammation in the small bowel, and I'm curious why your GI did not put you on Pentasa or any of the immune modulators like azathioprine or another? If you can tolerate Apriso then I would suggest you talk to your DR about Pentasa, since it is a mesalamine and is active throughout the small bowel and colon.

That would explain why I haven't felt better! I gained the weight I had lost back (I was down to 92 lbs, back to 115ish; I'm 5'1'') so that's an improvement but the pain isn't going away.

The only reason I can think of is that the ITP is another autoimmune disorder. But I'm not sure how the Pentasa works and if it could make my ITP worse.

Pentasa will have no effect on your ITP :).
