Having a Barium X ray today what can someone tell me about this

Had the Colon surgeon visit me last night because during my colonoscopy there was a stricture and they couldnt get the camera past it and they want to see the other side. I know at some point down the road they want to do surgery to resection that part of my bowel but their during a barium to see if and how much damage is done to the rest of my colon. If anyone has had one of these I would love to know how it works.

If memory serves me correctly, they will have you drink a chalky liquid and then do a series of xrays to get a look at the small bowel. The drink is nasty but not impossible to get down. Make sure you drink plenty of water of the next couple of days to flush all that barium out.

ok so thats not the stuff to put up your but I read 2 different things one for upper GI and one for lower GI their trying to get pic of the other side of my colon where the colonoscopy didnt reach because of my stricture

Yep you can have an upper or lower......with the upper you drink the barium, with the lower it is inserted in your tushy.

If you are having the upper, as k for a roll of paper towels when they have you start drinking the barium.  I used the towels to wipe my tongue after every swig and it made it easier to get all of it down.  Also be prepared as it may take a while for this test.  If things move slowly, they will keep taking xrays until the barium gets to where it needs to go.  However, if you are low on inflammation or strictures or have fast motility, it could go quickly.

If you are having the lower, you will really feel a sense of urgency as they insert the barium, but they prevent any from coming back out.

As with most tests, I think the prep is worse than the actual test.

OMG it is lower and they havnt given me any prep I think because I had my colonoscopy just less then 2 days ago but am still bleeding a little bit. I dont understand they keep saying we want your bowel to rest clear liquids etc nurtion bag and all but they want to keep irritating my bowl with shoving stuff up it I keep telling myself this to will pass I know why there doing it so they can see how far the stricture goes and how the other side of my bowel loks but I seriously think im going to have melt down at any moment

Oh Mom I hope I did not scare you.  I really found the lower GI to not be a big deal...I was younger so a little embarrassing and now I could care less what they look at.

I had my first lower GI while in the hospital post emergency resection.  Same as you, I was on bowel rest and IV feeds.  This should not too much more irritating for you as I remeber.

I had the X ray done this morning and it was only painful when the dialated that bollon in my rectum I have had Chrones for a while undiagnosed so I have scar tissue and anal fissure they used the gastrography solution because of my stricture that flat table was cald and I was still bleeding ans sore from my colonoscopy not a pleasant experience I will never ever let them do that to me a again back to back i need to heal from one thing then move on to the next. So now Im pretty cranky just glad to be back in my room.

Well, at least the scope and barium series is behind you and hopefully they got the answers they need!!! Ahhhhhhh. Sometimes we've just got to be grateful for small favors. *sigh*
