Hello:

On 10/1 my son tested positive for C-Diff, Doc treated with Flagyl 500mg three times daily for 10 days. Stool started to form up after about two rounds of antibiotic. Course of antibiotics finished up yesterday afternoon. However, yesterday morning stool started to be loose again and also last night and this morning. Diet has remained the same he did not try anything new. Finished all of the antibiotic and took is exactly as prescribed.

I guess my question is could it be that he needs another round of antibiotic or should I wait a few days to see if stool will form up again? I have bleached the house from top to bottom. Or is the loose stool from the C-Diff or something else seeing as symptoms returned before he completed treatment?

Anyone who has dealt with C-Diff any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

Hi Dingleeire, I'm sorry to hear your son had c. diff. It's probably one of the most miserable things you can catch. I got it in 2010, and just in this year have had 3 flare-ups of it.

I would call the doctor and have your son go in to do a stool sample to test for c. diff. today. You don't want to do antibiotics right away, because there are only a couple of antibiotics that work for c. diff. If he builds up a defense against the Flagyl, he'll move on to Vancomycin, which is much stronger. Eventually with too much it will become ineffective. Granted, this is complete worst-case scenario and MOST LIKELY will not happen, but you just don't want to go down that route.

See if he's c. diff. positive in the stool sample first. Sometimes loose stools can just happen, even after the antibiotics finish. But don't assume either way. For me, the c. diff. caused my Crohn's to flare before I started on Remicade and was just on Asacol and Imuran.

I popped on this morning to research slippery elm for my crohn's disease but saw your post instead!

My whole family got C-Diff while on a trip to Mexico (including my 10 month old daughter). In any case, we never took antibiotics for it because a lot of people just go through months and months of flagyl and vancomycin, and the C Diff keeps coming back. I performed a home "fecal transplant" on myself, my daughter, and my husband. I know it sounds wild but a nurse here in Boulder said its the "silver bullet" treatment for C Diff. I believe it stops C Diff in 95% of cases whereas the antibiotics are like 40-50%. Obviously, its a strange sounding treatment but if you google "Dr Borody, C Diff" you'll get some great studies. You'll just need to find a suitable donor. Good luck! Nikki
