I figured something out that may only be true to me. I was on vacation and I was so sick I could not figure it out. When I came home I felt fine, only one loss of bowel. I was determined to figure it out  I went over and over my diet. I got home on Tuesday I made a cup of hot chocolate within minutes I was running to the bathroom, so I experimented. I waited till a day I was off work and I drank a cup of hot chocolate and it was like a enema. Hot chocolate and chrons does not mix. :( I can eat some chocolate but it causes my stool to loosen so I guess I wont be using any more chocolate in my diiet.

Aww, crap! Hate how crohns sucks the fun out of life. Have you tried Yerba Mate Chocolatte tea? Tastes great with a little rice milk. Could be worth a try to get just a taste of chocolate. I wonder if it's the cocoa that bothers you or maybe something else like milk, soy or caffeine in the chocolate?

I can never eat any chocolate because of two reasons. The first is I have GERD and immediately after I eat it, the LES sphincter becomes loose and reflux starts. If I can tolerate chocolate stomach wise, my rectum will become swollen the night I have eaten chocolate. Chocolate is number 1 in the list of my forbidden food.

Oh yes, if I eat too much it aggrevates GERD. And depending on the type of chocolate it also gives me mouth ulcers. No fair!

It's not true for me: I can drink hot chocolate quite happily. I would not conclude it's the hot chocolate which was the problem just yet. The fact that you ran to the bathroom only minutes after finishing the hot chocolate makes me think that peristalsis had been triggered -the wave-like contraction of muscles which move food along the digestive tract. Even in normal folks without Crohn's, eating a meal or drinking a hot drink will sometimes stimulate an urge to defacate, but for those with Crohn's, the process tends to be much exaggerated. Anyway, the point is that any hot liquid at that point could have triggered the same running-to-the-bathroom effect in you. It's all a matter of timing; depending on where food eaten hours or even days ago is in the digestive tract, eating/drinking something may or may not trigger peristalisis and thusly a BM.

I would try experimenting with other hot liquids - soup, tea, etc. - a few times to rule out or confirm that it is only hot chocolate which has that effect on you and it wasn't just coincidence.

Growing up, we always had hot chocolate and toast before we got to see what Sanata brought. My sister and I were always feeling lousy on Christmas. We both think now it was the hot chocolate. But I would not write off everything like Nice said...I have found recently that hot things (and really cold things) tend to set me off. I have started limiting my chocolate, but have not eliminated it yet due to the reflux issues. I do know to watch hot soup and ice water as both have sent me running to the potty.

There's a ton of sugar in hot chocolate, not to mention all the other chemicals they put in it...eating dark chocolate with 80% or higher content is actually considered healthy...everyone reacts differently to everything though...hot chocolate never gave me the runs or gut cramps or anything, but I no longer drink it because it's processed.

Hot chocolate can be made with nothing more than chocolate and hot milk... This is more than two ingredients, but you get the point.

Hot chocolate

You don't have to drink the stuff out of a packet; and indeed, most packet hot chocolate I wouldn't touch - in particular all the low-calorie options. But a proper chocolately hot chocolate can be a thing of joy. If in doubt, try an Italian hot chocolate, as the Italians know how to make it.

Thanks so much I am going to try more options, as for the hot cold thing I eat alot of chicken noodle soup homemade, one of the few things that does not make me sick, I am going to try to make it with dark chocolate, and I only use almond milk, or soy I am pretty much lactose free, something I learned here thanks,.And the italian chocolate. And yerba maybe one of these would work. I am so tired of loosing bowel control. Now today I didnt have loose stool, I couldnt quit qoing, it is weird and painful. I am so use to having diaherra. We give up so much I just hate to give up my hot chocolate. I have gerd but al long as I take my prilosic I am good. Thanks for all the great tips I wil try them all, not at once though, :)

Yeah NCOT....I was referring specifically to the packaged hot chocolate since it's more than likely the majority are referring to that kind when they mention "hot chocolate". Unless someone is being specific as to the type of hot chocolate they're talking about, it's only going to be natural for anyone else to assume they're referring to store bought packaged kind.

Yeah, hot chocolate can be made with 2 ingredients that you mentioned, but 1) the chocolate they use will likely have additives (as in, it won't likely be pure chocolate) and 2) the OP never said homemade hot chocolate, so why would anyone assume that it might be.

I don't have much of a problem with chocolate. But then again I don't eat or drink much of it. What I have found out is that caffeine will make me go a lot so I try to avoid a lot of caffeine. Which is in chocolate also in Hot chocolate the prepackage kind has trans-fat in them that's why I stopped drinking those. It usually takes 20minutes for your food to digest if I remember right. I'm not sure about liquid drinks. All in all I would say caffeine and fatty fried foods will make me buddies with John if ya know what I mean. So I try to stir clear of it if I can. Chocolate is a definite no-no for me! That would be ALL types of chocolate since my gut rejects it all! I do much better on an all natural/organic diet. No preservatives or artificial anything and of course, no sugars.
