Xifaxan / Refaximin experiences, anyone?

I am going to ask about giving this topical (to gut) antibiotic a shot for my persistent flare of 2 months now- there seem few cons trying it because it is completely non-systemic. Has anyone currently active here tried it , and if so what was your experience like? Thanks

I tried it...It didn't work at all for me. I do better with systemic antibiotics. I felt great after 10 days of IV Vancomycin, but I was only given that because I had sepsis.

Thanks, Raleigh NC- glad the systemics helped... Traditionally, antibiotics flare me up; did the xifaxan give you any adverse side effects? I am thinking it sounds low risk enough to try as a flare breaker even though my expectations are low.

I was on it for several months. A combination of rifaximin and other meds helped me get better after the first time I was hospitalized - at that point I couldn't eat, and the rifaximin and entocort helped.

That said, the med is really, really expensive. It was over a $1000 for a month's worth. Maybe even $2k.  I have insurance, but my copay was still super high and my dr. had to write a note before my insurance would cover it.


I didn't notice any side effects from it. Good luck with your decision!

I tried it twice and it didn't work in both times. In the first time, it gave me a flare up. In the second time, I took it with a probiotic but I had to stop it because it caused me C and I had at that time fecal impaction and a severe proctitis flare up.
I have to admit that it stops D. I also read that it can induce remission after 4 months but that wasn't my case.

I got zero side effects off it. I was on it for small bowel bacterial overgrowth. Sometimes it's helps my symptoms & other times not. But overall I found it effective & side effect free, which is unusual for me :)

I was given Xifaxan for bacterial overgrowth. Started it yesterday, so took two pills total. Woke up at 5:30 AM with lower bowel discomfort, rumbling, gas and felt nauseated. Took a Gas-X but no relief. Finally called the on-call Doc who said this is usually well tolerated but to stop it and call my own doctor tomorrow. It also makes my chronic dry mouth and thriat worse. Then I read somewhere that sometimes this happens and your body needs to adjust to it. I took 4mg Zofran which helped a little. I am debating whether to try another pill again but am afraid to. Due to the dryness, I can hardly swallow now.
Anyone had these issues?
