Remicade - stricture

I have been told by my doctor that remicade could lead to bowel obstruction if you have stricture. Anyone here know why??? :-)   Thanks. I do not know if this is the case or they want to keep me on imuran , because of the high costs of Remicade.

When you have a stricture with inflammation and use Remicade it can heal the inflammation quickly and cause more scar tissue. So that could cause your stricture to narrow even more. Hope that makes sense, that was the explanation given to me.

Hi Krica,

I have UC but am on remicade and have strictures in the lower quarter of my colon. My Gi has never said anything about problems relating to remicade and strictures. I am also very interested in this. My Gi has hardly said anything about the strictures (though i got to see them in a scope and it was rather interesting looking).

Sorry to be no help. But i will ask when i talk to my Gi this week.

I have read the same thing basically as Nanners has replied.

However, a top Crohn's specialist in Canada suggested that since I have been recently diagnosed with Crohn's disease there is a possibility that my stricture at the rectosigmoid may be fibrotic and may respond to use of Remicade.

I did have two Remicade infusions approved but have not gone that route as I do not have symtoms.

Krica, I have been reading your posts with interest as I have decisions to make also but feeling great with no medications at the time.

Julie, I feel the same as you. How can I have major surgery when I feel  SO great.

Just wanted to share some information with you. I too have a stricture in my rectum and my GI has classified it as being fibrotic as well. I am also on remicade but the remicade to my sadness has not worked in alleviating the constipation that I am experiencing.

I know that everyone's body will respond to medications differently but I hope that my experience will help some people get an idea of what to expect when their doctor decides to try a new treatment. I hope that my experience will help you in your situation Bammers.
