How long have you been in remission after first bowel resection?

Does anyone know of a person who has had a bowel resection for CD, and then afterwards, has NEVER never had any type of reocuurence or symptom of  CD again or at least not for many many years?.  If so, do they take any meds?

My friend's son was diagnosed at age 16, had a resection a few months later and has not had any significant disease since then (about 10 years). He takes Pentasa, and maybe something else, I am not sure.

I hope I can continue to answer this question affirmatively. It has now been 18 months since my resection, and I continue to have normal bloodwork and no symptoms. I have taken Humira bi-weekly since my surgery.

My son had a bowel resection just about a year ago, recent scope shows 3 small ulcers at resection site. Had been taking Asacol and 6mp for maintenance, just started Budesonide 9mg 2 days ago. So I guess remission has not been very long for him.

I had a resection of 18" of the mid-ileum in early 1978 and was blessed w/a TWENTY YEAR REMISSION of symptoms.

What is your disease status now? Is your disease active and causing some serious problems? Are your symptoms in temporary remission due to prednisone?

Remission lasted about a year for me, (Resection at terminal Ileum 21" in July 2005) - Started having obstructive issues in 2006 - Started GI bleeds in late 2007 and had to get 3 inches removed at the terminal ileum in mid 2008 due to stricturing and Ulceration that was causing Significant GI bleeds.
Was good from 2008 until mid 2012 and GI bleeds started again... started 6MP 3 months ago, been on Prednisone for 4 months starting to ween off (started at 60MG down to 30MG)
I wish you guys the best of luck, hopefully it is minor and the budesonide will nip it early
Typically, after surgery, doctors will put you on Humira or some medication to delay the disease's return
Remember, Crohns is not curable, even with Surgery, the disease will come back, but you can significantly reduce the chance or effect of return with proper medicine even if you do not have symptoms after surgery

Had a resection in 2000, remission for 10 years. I decided to go meds free in 2003, maybe not the best choice, but I made it. I started having minor symptoms in 2010 and started Cimzia. Happy and still pain free.

I was lucky, 10.75 years of 90% pain free remission, and on asacol 3X day. was able to work, hike every weekend, and hunt during the fall month`s, deer meat is very lean it baseicly fat free..only red meat I`ll eat.. Doc, said crohn`s is pretty bad and agressive, he said he did about 6 sticture opening`s and cut out what was just beyond hope.. and fixed 2 fistula`s.. to this day I`ve had my 3rd, opp. and run to the bathroom 5-10 times in the morning and then in the evening, only eat 2 times aday, then use my pain med`s when heating pad won`t get rid of scare tissue pain form digesting my low residue meal.. only have 10% colon left and half my rectum, all my doc`s say I`ll need ostomy down the road, till then who knows ???? watch my diet and hope for the best, and remind my self that there is alway`s some who is worst off than I am......! hope everybody has a Stress free & pain-free Merry Christmas...

Hi, I had my first resection in 93 and fortunately went into remmision for 15 wonderful years I was under no consultants or on any meds for that time and even questioned if i had crohns, but in 2008 I hasd a massive flare up and ended up having major surgery with a temp ileostomy looking back although I had a long remmision if i had stayed on meds and being kept an eye on maybe the flare up in 08would not of been as bad as it was, or I would of still been in remmision I wouldnt do it again inow stick with the meds and have regular check ups Bev x

1st bowel resection 11/2008-remission lasted 9 months before flaring
2nd bowel resection 6/2012- never got any remission active crohns in July 2012...
Luckily we are all different...

One resection so far of terminal ileum and ascending colon 6 years ago.

Signs of inflammation shown in colonoscopy a year later. Mostly symptom free all these years. Did take some iron and entocort for short periods of time. No pain but short-bowel syndrome causing D.

Other than that been only on Pentasa to maintain my disease although Dr. has been pushing me to put me on 6 mp as a precaution which i've declined all this time.

So i guess i consider myself pretty lucky compared to others.

I had ruptured ileum and 18" resected in 1990....22 years ago.  In those 22 years was mostly just pentasa (and bad at taking it like I was supposed to)...with two rounds of pred for short runs.  I just had a new major flare and doc is talking surgery again as the 6 weeks fast taper of pred has not stopped the pain and I just started eating again this weekend.  I am considering asking for another round of pred for longer....but I won't hesitate to go the surgery route again if it is needed.

I had 1 resection surgery 2009? 18" Removed. Waited 1 year being treated with Asacol and scope found imflammation at site. Started Humira and waited another year and was scoped again. Scope comfirmed no disease present. Currently not feeling the greatest and was trying to get scoped before end of year but no openings so I will have to try next year. I'm really hoping that the disease has not returned.. Not sure what next drug would be.

17" of the ileum removed gave me roughly 15 years of much needed relief. I took Questran for a year after the surgery to aid in the absorption of bile. After that, I ignored the recommendation of maintenance meds and didn't see a doctor for a very long time.

I went 9 years after my first resectioning. I was on medication, but I can't remember exactly which one. I just had my second resectioning in 2009 and I can't seem to go 6 months without having some sort of flare up. Right after my second resectioning, my dr. took me off of all my meds except for an over the counter probiotic. I think this has a little to do with why I did not have a long remission like the first time.

After my resection surgery I went almost 17 yrs of keeping my Crohn's in remission by diet, I still don't eat redmeat, I stay away from all foods that are hard to digest. Sadly to say I am in a flare right now and it is kikn my butt. The diet is not working anymore I think this flare was brought on by a pain mgmt doc who just didn't care and was putting me on all types of medication.
