Healing with diet?

Hello everyone!
I'm new here today and because my fiancé has lower bowel ???? Sorry, I'll get the exact name. He has been dealing with this for over 10 years and I'm not sure of all the things he's been through yet but at the moment he is using the Asacol foam. Me being more of a naturalist want to help him through diet and eliminate as many drugs as possible. I am learning more about his problem and found your forum today in hopes of doing just this. Please be patient with me and little laughter if possible because I'm very serious in wanting to bring him as much comfort as humanly possible and open to any suggestions but hoping to avoid too many meds.
I'll keep reading what has been previously written and once I have the exact diagnosis I will post that as well.

I will tell you the same thing. I was on Asacol tablets( foam is milder than oral asacol) and maintained 2 years of remmission but then stoped it and flare is so bad that even on Prednisone for 6 weeks, I am not in full remmission. My next medication would be either immuran or ramicade. So if  he is feeling good with foam, don't discontinue. It is the mildest medication for this condition.You don't want him to go on immuran or remicade  unless it is absolutely necessary. So if you want him to help, make sure he takes his medication regularly. You can always add natural medicine with asacol.

You can always add probiotics and make sure he eats healthy.

The danger with stopping a med that's working is that you'll flare almost always. Then it takes stronger meds (like prednisone) to get under control again. And his is such a mild maintenance med. This is chronic, and it's not easily controlled by diet. Very few of us have mild enough to be able to control by diet, although it most definitely helps to keep from getting worse that stronger meds are needed.

Zady, you're a good friend for taking it upon yourself to find out information about what your fiance is dealing with. Your relationship will be so much stronger because you participate yourself, not just getting your info thru your ailing partner.

I have Penetrating Crohn's, which can get pretty nasty with the need for lots of surgery. Several years ago, my symptoms were much milder, and I thought that I could get myself off the meds thru diet and lifestyle. What happened was, as soon as the meds were out of my system, my symptoms erupted and I am still dealing with the consequences several years later.

My personal experience has been that the meds are necessary, but I feel much healthier overall when my diet excludes partially-hydrogenated substances, dyes and sugar.

My best friend is a nutritionalist and has really helped us with a better understanding of the inside of the gut but it's still really hard I think on the person that has this to eat correctly. It's also very important and I agree with the journal on what you eat and what happens that day. Right now is the worst he's had it in years. Now I've only known him almost 2 years so I concur it's the worse I've seen him go through too. I've just started living here in the UK and so I am just now getting first hand experience with day to day living. We really do eat well and healthy and we've added vitamins and trying so hard to get him to drink more water. Anyone on the Asacol foam have problems with steroid like symptoms? He also has terrible body twitches upon bedtime or settling down time, is this a symptom of the meds? I really want him to go get a fresh checkup because it's been several years since the last one but this means getting scoped and he says when they do it here they don't sedate you which seems barbaric in the least. I'm not a big fan of doctors or medicine when not absolutely necessary but I feel this is serious enough to be sure we stay on top of it constantly. If it were my body I think I'd have to fast, clean my gut out and then add things in slowly to see a way to pin point which foods really made it worse. I appreciate your patience with my lack of knowledge and don't take anything I say personal that may not sound like I have any sense!! I'm just trying to think in and out of the box to get him in less pain!

Thank you so much for this extra information. I will let him know. He says it's not diagnosed as Crohn's but lower bowel colitis? I just found this forum by googling the medication. Perhaps what ever doctor he had at that time doesn't do the scope with anesthesia but that's just not good. I know he has private insurance as well as the NHS so he should be able to insist on it being done. Now that I read what you have written under your post I see Proctitis and that sounds like something he called it too. Hmmm will have to get more info!

Think again about meat...it takes days for it to digest, and for me never worked well.
not smoked meats, or processed, like sausseges or even bacon. Fish, chiken and turkey are the only proteins that work well for me.
I am entering in a remission, so I can take fruits. Its been 2 years since no fruits did any good, besides I know I wasn´t getting any vitamin because it would make the way out in less then 5hours. Apple and Melon and working just fine. I know that acerola, is vety good for digestion and inflamation too.
I cant take any green leaf veg. Potatos are friendly and usually the base of my menu. Any kind of potatos, but then again, can´t eat too much.
I am still trying to leave normally with these disease, but without eating everything I like gets difficult
