MRI results came out normal but still in pain

So I just got a call from my doctors office and they told me that they got the MRI results and they said everything is normal. Which is great. They told me to keep taking all my medication, of course.

But now I'm confused as to why I keep having sharp pain in my stomach and so much pain in the perineum and having 5-6 BMs a day. Don't get me wrong I'm glad everything is normal, that's wonderful! But I'm just at a loss as to why I'm having pains if everything is normal, blood tests and now MRI too. Have you ever had normal results and still experiencing pain?

Oh and I had taken a 10 day course of Cipro and Flagyl about 5 days before. Could that have gotten rid of any abscess or infection that would've shown up on the MRI?

Sorry that you are suffering. I do still have pain though I have never had a naked eye ulcer up till now. My diagnosis was based on symptoms and biopsies. All the MRIs and CT scans were clear. IMO, it's not necessary to have clear mainfestations of the disease. It could be active there down in the lower layers of the intestines. All we one can do is just take the meds regularly as they have told you.
I take antispsmodics to kill the pain. When I saw my GI a couple of days coz of increased pain, he added a new antispasmodic. I now take 8 tablets/day. Can you ask for some to relieve your pain? Is this pain bearable or is it that painful that you can not withstand it?

When was your last Colonoscopy? I always trust my symptoms more than the tests. If you question results, dig deeper. I would.

So does that mean that you don't have a fistula? What about the hole you found? Or were you also looking for other aspects of the Crohn's? I just completed around two months of having my GI do a bunch of tests because I was having abdominal pain, nausea, a sense of fullness after barely eating and terrible GERD. I was embarrassed because almost all the tests were normal...my stool test, blood work -normal, and upper endoscopy looked normal too. We did a ph probe test which showed reflux disease ( but I already knew that) My doc was explaining that with Crohn's, we often get functional bowel problems too, which is basically IBS....food just doesn't go through well. For me, we added Miralax daily, as I tend to be very constipated, Dexilant for the GERD, and Domperidone....I had gastroparesis last year, and we are seeing if it will help my stomach empty faster. Sooo, I haven't had any spread of the Crohn's, but my doc was still helpful. I'm feeling a lot better. I was pretty worried that my Crohn's was active again, and surprised when I found out it wasn't. Keep experimenting with what will work for you...the suggestion of antispasmodics may be a good one. My doc also recommended that I get more physically active. I walk my dog every day, but for the new year, I signed up with a personal trainer to get me started on an exercise program.

Sorry for the long post. I guess what I'm trying to say, is that absence of active disease doesn't always translate into feeling fine. I want to get one of those "I hate my Guts" T-shirts from Cafepress.com! I always thought of IBS as one of those throw away diagnosis, like "there's really nothing wrong with you...you are just a big whiner." But I have changed my mind. My GI thinks the Crohn's drives the IBS and makes it more challenging. I hope this long rant actually helps, and you feel better soon.

The hole is still there and visible and it's near the perineum which is why it hurts. And it gets red and discharge comes out of it so I'm not sure why it did not show up on the MRI when even the GI saw it when I showed it to him. But now that the MRI results came back normal it's as if it's of no importance. That's why I'm still going to the gyno my GI referred to see what he says.

I am not sure as I have not read all comments but do you HAVE Crones showing on biopsy? If nothing shows on MRI maybe you have Irritable Bowel in addition to the Crones? I do, and I get bloating, cramping, gas and DI? I avoid coffee, garlic, onions, MSG, and alcohol as they all irritate my gut! Also, gas causing veggies like broccoli and Brussels sprouts and cabbage? I have a stricture in my sm bowel as well, from Crones and that DID show on the MRI. Hope this helps!

Dear Gumby and all readers,

I have a stricture in Ilieum that is short in length but I am in a lot of pain. My Dr has never prescribed pain pills or anti spasmodics? Maybe it would help me? As I feel the spasms, can see them, in the area? It puts pressure in my lower back nerve and HURTS! Also, am experiencing bad headaches? I am supposed to have surgery to remove stricture while it is small as it is the only area of Crones and they think its scar tissue. I was only diagnosed in March this year? I had no previous knowledge of Crones! I DO have IBS as well! Ideas anyone?!

Hi Nicole and welcome to the forum,
It would probably be good for your to start a new thread/topic and introduce yourself, as we try to respond to the original persons' issue for each topic. But since you've asked, has your doctor tried any medication for the stricture and the Crohn's? Generally, a stricture can be caused from inflammation or scar tissue. If it is from inflammation, then medication can help, but if it is from scar tissue, then surgery is the only option if you are in pain and can't deal with it. If your doc is sure that it is from scar tissue, and it is a small area, then surgery isn't a bad idea.

Lovely, I can imagine you are getting really frustrated! If the GYN doc doesn't know what to do, then you probably need to go back to the GI doc and push for answers. I've never had a fistula, but maybe someone else will come along and give you some advice. Sorry you are going through all of this!!!

Oh yes I definitely have Crohn's. I was diagnosed in 2010. Have had 3 fistulas and 3 abscesses with granulomas along with a diagnosis with Colonoscopy. I have been on Humira and Imuran for more than 2 years now. There's nothing showing up now in MRI because I am clinically in remission. But it might be possible that I have IBS along with Crohn's, not sure confused But I still don't understand what that small hole might be, it gets red and has discharge, I could've sworn it was a fistula but I guess I was wrong. Will find out once I go to gyn. sad

So glad to hear you are in remission! I take Imuran too, but it is not working. I need to either remove the small structure I have near the ileum or try Humeria? They say I should do yhe surgery as I will most likely need it eventually? I am in a lot o pain and back and forth to hospital this month. The only evidence they see of crones is that stricture. And yet so much symptoms! They say its hard with IBS too? I would keep an eye on that problem, sounds like you are on the right track! Good luck!
