hey all that follow my saga...  felt bad on dec 8th and 9th had pain on the left side .   got fever  went to ER.. admitted, went into septic shock again (3rd time) . colon and left kidney the culprits. kidneys shut down, on ventilator for several days. they were going to take the kidney out but at the last minute they thought i would not survive the surgery. since i was so far down already. then things turned around or so im told as i dont remeber any of it..  there was a fall in the ICU ( me trying to get up i guess)  so that banged me up a bit.   ended up coming home on IV antibiotics, IV anti fungals and my TPN.. which i did not get the whole time i was in the hospital... i bloated up more than 35 lbs of water weight, my skin split open in places and i sprung leaks in my arms water would just flow out of the skin.   any how feeling better and lost all the water and more weight than that. so i actually weigh LESS than when i went in by 10lbs!   woo hoo.. just and update on me   happy new year. at least i made it home for xmas... smilewinkgrin

You are one super tough dude to survive that.....glad you are still here, and posting more of your story.
Hope you get a smooth run for a while - sheesh.

WOW!! Glad we were both out in time for xmas... You give me hope as I my CD is getting crazier and crazier septic shock has been a big fear this year I'm so happy you pulled through!
I know I don't post often but I do enjoy your posts and wish you well on your journey..

holy crap! that's crazy. i can't believe your skin split open from the water. i always thought that would happen to me. i gained 40 lbs of water in 2 days last year from iv prednisone and i kept telling my doctors how much pain i was in (couldn't walk, lift my arms, you know the drill). they said water retention is normal for prednisone users and i shouldn't worry. now i have permanent nerve damage in my feet from those idiot doctors/nurses.

Dang, Randy! That had to be one heck of a big relief for your family to get you home before Christmas! Doggone Murphy sure must have it in for you. *sigh* He obviously doesn't like to lose and we are ever so grateful you were able to best him yet again. Yer one tuff cookie, my man, one heck of a tuff cookie. Thank G--. (((hugs))) Thanks for making it home and bringing us up to date. May 2013 bring relief and MUCH BETTER health to you and yours!

Darn Randy...I'm at a loss for words other than to say I am so sorry about your health down-turn. I am very happy you are home and doing better. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help out. I'm not that far away!

heck no guys. i dont do anything part way, its full speed or not at all! ;o)..ides, thanks, but your just as laid up as me! ;o).. good to see some old names pop up. although for a bad reason i guess... but if thats waht it takes to kep us going then ill do my part......

Well Randy...you definitely live an "adventurous" journey!  Funny but you trying to get up while so sick in the hospital does not surprise me in the least.  Nothing keeps a good man down---or a stubborn one!

I went septic back in 1990 with a rupture.  Please take it slow now and heal gently!  You are still one of those that lifts my heart when I think of you and my first posts on here....

My reply is late, but just posting to say I'm glad you came back from the brink of death. Seriously, I don't know what I'd do if I was in your shoes - have a nervous breakdown? No wait, I already tried that... <_<

SomeDude, "no guts" is for small intestine. Healthy individuals have some 20 feet of small intestine. RandyNoGuts has "donated" all but some 3-5 feet of his small intestine to the pathologists' plates thru the years. Randy is a record holder for length of time on TPN - some 8 years or better now. The last "anniversary" I remember was 7 years. Randy can clarify all this better than I have when he gets around to it.

IIRC, Randy has been on 12 or 13 years of TPN? I, too, have very little small bowel remaining. Everything else following the small bowel is gone, too, as well as my gall bladder and female organs. My doc affectionately calls me the gutless wonder, lol. Such is what 33 years of fistulizing Crohn's can do.

While I have been on TPN in hospital, I am able to hold my own most of the time w/eating. It was a 3 year process to get me to the point of sustaining (on a fairly regular basis) electrolyte balance as well as maintaining nutrition. I think my remaining small intestine finally got the clue that it had to step up and do more work, at least when it feels up to the job :-D.

Randy - I've followed your story for a long time (here and @ Yahoo GeoCities when it still hosted your website). I'm glad to read you've rallied again!

I just checked the word "septic shock", because I had no idea of its meaning.  It sounds pretty scary.  You are very courageous.  TPN must be expensive, I guess?

hey all. thanks for the well wishes.. i am slowly getting my "sea legs" back under me... dont have to use a walker anymore. well i will if i have to do a long walk...

somedude: noguts.. C2 is correct.. about 2 feet of small bowel and 1/3-1/2 colon left...

time on TPN ... finshed my 13th year while in the hospital! and the record that i can find is about 35-40 years. TPN was started in 1968 according to my book on the subject... was tested on beagle puppies...

this was my 3rd bout of sepsis and ive had 1 of bacteremia, or blood poisoning.. i read online that sepsis is about 40% fatal, so dont know how many more i can take. ;o)

been using a temporary PICC line since getting out of the hospital. will get anew Hickman maybe by the end of January. so much more conveinient. there is a photo of me in the ICU that my brother took. he cant seem to get it sent to me from his new "super phone" but when i get it i will share.. ;o)

I just came back from my forum vacations and thats what I get... I can't think of a rolecoaster more scary than that, maybe because you not obliged to them.

I think about you, and the no guts part, from time to time. Your spirits (maybe not all the time) are inspirational to me! I'm sending you a hug, as <<strong>> as you can take.

My goodness Randy!  God's not done with you yet - that's for sure.  You have been such an inspiration to me!  Glad you are better and headed in the upward direction now.

meshice, maybe not upward but vertical! better than the horizontal.. ;o)..

as an update, as of today there has been no growth in the bacteria culture or the yeast culture done last week. so now i can get my hickman catheter replaced! yea! and i have anew TPN pump on the way. one went TU last week..
