New member with 38 year history of CD now having heartburn issues

What have you tried for the heartburn?

Welcome to Healing Well, AllyA! I only edited your post to add a subject heading. That usually attracts more readers. As Sheri asked, have you tried any meds? PPIs like Prilosec, Prevacid, Nexium, etc might offer some relief. My guess is that the cholestyramine powder is slowing your digestive system to the point your stomach is not emptying as quickly and causing a back-up leading to the heartburn.

Hi Ally! Like you, I love cholestyramine...I feel it gave me a life back outside of my house. I just recently started getting worse heartburn. I attribute it to several things. One being, the cholestyramine gave me much more ating freedom and I think I eat more things that cause heartburn than before. Especially chocolate, coffee and red sauce. I was also told that I have a small hiatel hernia and that may be causing some of the problem. My ehartburn was so bad it was giving me chest pains...they tested for heart issues and I ahve none, then put me on omeprazole for the burn.

Frankly, the omeprazole helps my sister, but not me. I had a recent bad flare and it seems my heartburn is greatly decreased since. I am thinking of taming my diet back down and seeing how that goes before I add omeprazole back as an option. Check with your doc on the PPIs and see if they are an option to consider.

Other things to consider--are you using chole or chole lite? I found the chole which is sugar sweetened gave me nausea and heartburn. THe lite worked better. I am also still experiementing with the minimum amount of chole to take...mostly because this last flare up has me starting over on figuring out the D versus C times and foods, but I also think it might help the heartburn and keep me in check on not eating the "wrong" things for me.
