In hospital, need to vent, Bacteria in blood

I was admitted to UNC hospitals om Monday. I was having pain in mid to left lower abdomen under belly button. Also having nausea and feeling very fatigued. I was due for iron transfusion today at home clinic. In ER they found I had bacteria in blood. It first showed staphylococcus so they started vancomycin. Then, he came back and said found streptococcus so switching to another antibiotic. Then, stomach hurting bad so I get treated like a drug abuser just because I have asked for pain medication twice today. I also asked for 1 dose of Ativan for nausea because that is what is ordered. Now, a new shift rn comes in to tell me I am using too many narcotics just like the previous nurse did. I am so mad. My pain med is dilaulid only .5 . This is a small dose. I just got 2 doses of this in 24hours. I am still hurting in my tummy but they don't care of the pain only narc meds u get. The md this morning said he wanted a echo to make sure heart valves were'nt effected but no order ever wrote for this either. Plus, wants me to get port a cath to send me home with IV therapy. Again. Nothing in chart. I am so mad right now. Why do we get treated like drug criminals when we ask for relief? Instead they have made me more upset which increases the pain. Have any of u had bacteria inf. in blood before?... It is scaring me because I can't get answers of to the extent of this infection. I am nervous about becoming sepsis because they don't know how I got infected to begin with. Maybe crohns, but Ct didn't show abscess. Maybe my oral dental health but the didn't check my mouth. Please help...

When the doctor makes the rounds in the AM, ask that he/she take an extra moment to answer some questions. Start w/the concern about the "blood infection(s) due to your history w/MRSA", address your concerns about the following:

the order for medication for nausea and how often available to you
PAIN, inadequate pain relief, only 2 doses in 24 hours
scheduled iron infusion
echo to investigate heart valves (what indications cause ER doctor to suggest it and why no order for it)
portacath for at home IV therapy (ER doctor suggests it, but no order for it)

and if the situation isn't rectified ask to speak to the Patient Advocate (especially BEFORE agreeing to being released).
oral dental health (due to your past history w/granuloma cysts in mouth)

Do you mean actual, real MRSA infections? Or staph aureus infections? MRSA (medication resistant staph aureus) is resistant to most all antibiotics but most staph aureus infections are NOT resistant to most all medications.

Just last fall I was Dx'd w/POSSIBLE MRSA, but fortunately, whilst mine was resistant to the medication they started me on prior to results of the culture, it was resistant to several different antibiotics and was quickly "done in" by one course of the antibiotic they switched me to upon receiving the sensitivity results of the culture.

I was in the hospital last year with a blood infection, streptococcus mitis which is a bacteria from the mouth. I have a heart valve disease, so mine went into my diseased valve and therefore I got endocarditis.

I'm guessing they began culturing before any antibiotics were given? They will most likely want to put in a PICC line, ask for it to go in your non dominant arm. Good luck to you. Is someone in infectious diseases following you?
