My daughter was diagnosed with Chrohns at 17, she is now 24. She was on remicade for about 6 years and it worked well for her however her hair is falling out which is devastating to her, Her doctor has started her on 6 mp. Does anyone have any feedback on the medication, it states its a chemo drug she does not have cancer, please reply

I had emergency surgery in August and I am on Humira....my hair is falling out as well. I have started taking biotin in hopes that it will slow down. I don't have any info on the 6mp but I am sure someone with more experience will chime in soon.

My daughte, age 9, is supposed to start 6MP tomorrow, but after reading the cautionary statement on the RX handout, I think we'll wait and talk to doc about it. I did ask doc yesterday if I should be scared of this med b/c I too had read it was a chemo drug. She said it's used as a maintenance chemo drug in high doses and used for IBD in low doses for maintenance. Pleae read my other post from earlier tonight re:cautionary statement...."6MP friend or foe?"

Good luck...I really want to investigate a holistic route!

There is a shampoo I used to use. It was made to help cancer patients. I have thin hair and lose more than normal. It s called Nioxin. It comes I several different formulas but I rally saw a difference I the a,punt of hair I lost while on this. It is sold at salons. I am sur if t was invented to help cancer patients that it would help with our meds too. Good luck

Ok if you look at it most drugs used to treat Crohn's either started out treating something else or started out treating Crohn's and was found to help other things. Pentasa is also a drug they use for cancer patients, Remicade is used for RA, I believe Humira has a alternative to it as well. Don't let the side effects scare u if the docs thought the side effects were to bad for the patient I am sure they would not offer it as a medication to help them. I have learned that if I let the side effects scare me off on most medications doctors have given me I wouldn't be here today. I have had Crohn's for 20 years.

If it's a chemo drug then it's going to cause hair loss. Chemo causes hair loss.

I'd check in with the GI. They might prescribe folic acid or biotin to help with the hair loss, or at least give you an amount to take to help with it. I had good luck with folic acid helping with hair loss, but I don't remember what amount I was taking.

Hi! I am on 6mp (have been on it 60 days, but was on it previously for about a year). I *knock on wood* have had no major side effects from it. I am also a cosmetologist and can tell you that there is a shampoo that can help stimulate hair growth called Nioxin. You can get it from your stylist. Don't wash your hair everyday, but rather every other day and massage the scalp to also stimulate.

As far as 6mp goes, it does drain me for a while. It's almost as if my flare symptoms (diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain) get worse on 6mp before they get way better. It kicked me into remission before when I was on it at 75mg, so I am staying hopeful that it will do the same again. It does suppress your immune system and if you start reading stuff online it can get really scary, but as long as your lab work is monitored and your daughter knows when something is "off", she should be fine. Just have a close relationship with your GI dr.

misspriss88 - Thank you for your note on 6MP. Why did you go off 6MP? How long were you in remission and how do you tell the difference between a flare up / not being in remission? Or do they mean the same thing?
