Crohn's Disease and Humira

Hello everyone! I am new here. I have had CD for over 40 years. I started Humira less than a week ago. I feel weak and nauseous. I'd love to talk to others who have taken Humira.....  I am very nervous about all the side effects that I have read about.

I just stared Humira. I am not really having many side effects except headaches. I am having side effects from coming off the prednisone. I'm miserable from the effects coming off prednisone. Sorry you are having trouble. I've heard they effects get better with time.

I have been on humira for almost 5 years- on and off. I haven't had any side effects that I've noticed but I don't think it's does much for me. I was just weened off pred about 2 weeks ago and was getting a lot of headaches from that. Good luck!! Hope it works for you!

Hi Susie! I have been on Humira for 1 year in June. I was also scared reading all the warnings and scary posts / websites etc. I was very against it and put it off until I couldn't walk or eat any longer. At that point I was begging for it or anything to help. I started it and it put me in remission. I did also take imuran/azithioprine with it and they both helped a lot. It hurts at inj. sit when you do the shot and i get a buzzing feeling in my body after and then i am tired that day and the next but it's worth it. i also get blood tests (cbc, ast, alt etc) done every month to check to make sure i am still good :) I did choose to stop taking imuran as new info is coming out about increased risk of lymphoma and hepatitis especially in conjunction with humira so i stopped taking it by choice. I am a 28yr old mom of a beautiful 4yr old little girl - the risk of lymphoma (1 in 200 while taking both meds) was too much for (we have enough on our plate). and the humira has not been enough to keep me in remission :( but anywho, the humira on it's own is scary at first but think, crohn's left untreated is far more dangerous (risks of cancer, fistulas etc) that the risk of humira. that's my 2 cents... i hope it helps... i was the same on these boards looking for thoughts/ opinions/ advice right before i started - hang in there hun!

I have been on alot of different medications over the last 40 years. I had a bowel resection in 1986 where they took alot of my small and large intestine. I have had several obstructions over the years and there isn't a day that goes by that I am not in pain. I have been taking Imuran 75mg for many years and my GI is suppose to be weaning me off of that now that I have started the Humira. I also take Pentasa 500mg two capsules four times a day. I take several other medications for arthritis and depression. I also have Fibromyalgia. It has been over a week since I took the intitial 4 injections of Humira and I take 2 more shots this Monday. I am still so weak and exhausted, plus the nausea! My doctor gave me Phenegren for the nausea so that is helping alittle.

Hi Mia,

You sound like a wonderful inspiration! I am glad that your children are doing well. I remember being in fear watching my son grow up and cringing with any pain he might get. He ended up not having Crohn's Disease. Your positive outlook is amazing!!!

Thanks for the kind words, but we all know that it helps to have support throughout our illness. It's a burden having to go through all the pain and worries. But I found that if we keep helping one another in anyway we can, it will improve our attitude. Have you joined the Crohn's Foundation site, we did a walk last summer in Milwaukee WI and raised not only money but awareness for this disease. Get involved and anything I can do to help, let me know. Sounds like you've had your trouble with your diagnosis, just do you all you can to find a good diet for yourself, some exercise, like Pilates, the deep breathing and slow exercise helps immensely. I have even gone to acu-puncture for relief from pain. Find a place or something that makes you happy and be there...it will help your disease more than you know. What is your favorite hobby or thing to do? Good Luck.
