constant nausea with Crohn's disease

Does anyone else suffer from constant heartburn, acid reflux and nausea?  Anyone else feel really fatigued on Remicade? Any helpful hints are greatly appreciated, i'm so over feeling sick! ugh shakehead

hey, I used to feel nauseous just about all the time, with a very gaggy feeling in the back of my throat. I'm doing pretty good nowadays (due to the pred and imuran) but I found that ginger gravol (the herbal kind) helped alot, drinking tea... and if worse came to worse a real gravol (dimenhydrinate) Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!

Many Crohnies also suffer with Acid Reflux/Gerd. I take Prilosec for it now and its much better.

thanks for the tips! I'm an avid tea drinker, the prob with that is I get full SO quicly and Easily that I can't drink very much.  The acid reflux I've had since I was younger, but it feels like since the Chron's it's WAY worse.  I think i need to change my diet again.  Thank you for all you replies and advice.  Feel a lil better already :)

I just wanted to share that I also had acid reflux SOO Bad I would feel like throwing up.. EWWW... It was awful! But, since I've been taking Nexium every day, I have felt much better in the acid reflux department! I'd see about getting a script for Nexium or you could even get some prilosec OTC at the pharmacy or grocery store and give that a try.. My husband takes prilosec every day and I can remember the days he used to eat tums like they were candy.. It's amazing how it really does work.. :) Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!

I get constant waves of nausea--and, whenever I get them, I know that they foreshadow yet another run to the bathroom. Nausea seems to have become the first sign that my body's ready to expel the entire contents of my small intestine. Not fun. Diet ginger ale or diet caffeine-free Coke sometimes help a little. Nothing else really does. And I've developed lots of acid reflux, too, for which I take an occasional Zantac and just sort of suffer. With the nausea, the GERD, the cramps, the pain, the sore joints, the endless trips to the 'reading room'--this disease can be a real pain, and not just in the butt!

Do you also have abdominal bloating?

There's always the possibility of bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine. You might want to ask your doctor about that. I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed if it is something as easily tested for and remedied as bacterial overgrowth.

I take nexium as well and it works very well for me. no noticed side effects from Remicade. A simple tip that helps at night for preventing reflux is raise the head of your bed about 3 inches this helps keep the acid where it belongs.

How do you stop that? It seems that even when I was on a liquid diet I still had a lot of bloating. It sucks cause its extremely painful!!!

I don't really have problems with nausea, but I just started Remicade about a month ago and I am so fatigued!! It takes everything in me to go to work everyday. I have been wanting to get back working out and I can't seem to get started because I am so tired!! In fact I don't have the energy to really do anything besides work! I wish there was something to take to really boost my energy!!

Hey Brian84 I was just recently treated for a bacterial overgrowth and the gave me at 10 day course of Cipro, knocked it right out. I also changed to a better/stronger probiotic. Good luck!

Yep, antibiotics are how they treat bacterial overgrowth. You might want to be tested for it before just taking an antibiotic as some crohnies don't do well w/antibiotics. And Nanners is right about starting a good multiple organism probiotic. Also when taking a probiotic and an antibiotic always separte the doses by at least 2 hours, preferably 4 hours. Otherwise you are wasting the probiotic as the antibiotic doesn't recognize a good bacteria from a bad bacteria and indiscriminately kills them all. Or at least tries to.

I'm always nauseated. I throw up a lot, too. Zofran's the only thing that helps, but only if I can keep it down long enough to do its job.

One thing I may suggest for those of you on Nexium - I was on it briefly and it dropped my B12 levels so low that I was experiencing fatigue, dizziness, nausea, and body aches. This is especially important for those of us with CD as B12 levels are often low with us anyhow.

I used to experience nausea during a flare. If I got nauseous I knew that I would need to hit the bathroom quite soon after the nausea came on. Now I find I eat mentos to calm the nausea. My acupuncturist also showed me a pressure point on the inside of my wrist that helps calm the stomach as well. Ginger Ale and ginger gravol works great.

nawlinscate - you mentioned various diet pop. I'm not sure if you know or not but synthesized sweeteners (sorbitol, aspartame, sucralose) are really bad for those of us with crohns.

I have random nausea, and my GI hasn't been able to figure out the cause. It only started about a year ago. I've had gallbladder tests, am already on omeprazole (the rx form of prilosec so insurance pays for it :) ) and have all other tests normal....so I guess it's just something to deal with. Luckily phenergan doesn't make me drowsy anymore and I can just take that when it gets really bad.

Sometimes nausea can also be a sign of narrowing or a stricture. I know when I had my last stricture that was my most common complaint, nausea and vomiting.

I have had crohns disease since 1974. Emergency resection (5 ft.) in 2004. Sulfalazine is the drug I started at 14 years of age and it is the ONLY one that I take. Nausea started about 2 years ago (along with menopause). My Dr. suggested medical marijuana for my nausea and it works like a charm! If you are going to go this natural route, make sure that you have an 'indica' strain, not a 'stevia'. Indica relaxes the body, where stevia affects the brain. I have also benefited from natural healing including a bevy of vitamins and herbs, along with self-injected B-12 shots (4x weekly). In the past I have tried remicade, probiotics, omeprazole, zofran, with no relief, just horrible side-effects. The medical marijuana relaxes me enough to safely digest my food and drink plenty of water without any side effects other than feeling tired. GO TO THE BOOK STORE AND GET THE BOOK "PERscriptION FOR NUTRITIONAL HEALING", go over it with your GI and get off the pharmaceutical merry-go-round.

It was surprising to read my reply above, which I wrote three years ago. I'm now on a minimal daily dose of omeprazole for the acid reflux; I've just been on flagyl for the second time to correct a bacterial imbalance; and I'm supposedly in remission. But the herald of any need for the bathroom is still nausea. Lots of nausea, all day, every day. I hate it.
