Yesterday I went to see a new doctor. She advised me that I need to have a colonoscopy. She thinks that the crohns is still active and I have never responded to Humira (been on it since 2009). She mentioned that if the crohns was active she would put me on Imuran. When I told her I had been on that before and it made me very sick she dismissed it and said that it was because when I had it before I had a fistula and that is why the Imuran made me sick. Has anyone ever heard that before? Could taking Imuran make you feel sick because of a fistula?

Also looking for a new doctor in the St. Louis area if anyone has one they are happy with.

Actually, I got my fistula while on Imuran. Then Imuran gave me pancreatitis.

I have never heard that before. I once took 6mp, and it made me very sick, but I did not have a fistula at the time.

You could suggest trying 6mp instead of Imuran--they are essentially the same drug, but people who have bad reactions to one can sometimes tolerate the other. I could tolerate Imuran, but definitely NOT 6mp.

Looking for a new dr sounds like a good idea. I would suggest that you switch before having the scope.

Never heard of that one before. In fact, some studies have shown a positive effect on fistulas from Imuran. The only concern might be, if you couldn't tolerate it before, I would be leery of trying it again. Have you considered other biologics? I would seriously consider getting a second opinion, or find another GI.

Umm, no. Not that I know of. I don't know why a fistula would make Imuran make you feel sick. You should definitely get a second opinion on that.
And if you have been taking Humira since 2009 didn't it work? It's possible that now you have become resistant to it but it sounds strange for this GI to say you never responded to Humira. Did you feel better after taking Humira?

Hi if a doctor does not listen to you. I would find another doctor.
One whom cares and listens to you.

Agree with teddybearweiser, find a doctor that listens to you. your the boss who pays the bills.

Thanks for the replies. I did not intend to go back to this doctor just for the fact that she did not listen to me. I was curious to know though if that sounded crazy to anyone else or just me. As for the Humira working - I thought so. I have felt better since being on the Humira but now all the sudden everyone acts like if I am on Humira I should be symptom free. Honestly I never expected to be symptom free. I am just happy to be staying out of the hospital. I know there are lots of people with Crohn's who are worse than me. As long as I can take care of my kids and bring them to their activities I am ok with not eating until I get home from all that or sitting at a sporting event in pain. At least I get to be there. Is that possible? Can a person with crohn's be on medicine and be completely 100% symptom free?

Yes, its possible. Its called remission. It could be symptomatic remission where you are having no symptoms but there is still disease activity perking along inside you or it could be the blessed total remission we all long and hope and pray for.

Hi im on Imuran also known as azathioprine and in UK the doseage is dependent on your weight
I weight 62kg and am taking 100mg aday (2 , 50mg tabs) and has to be taken with a heavy meal to prevent sickness, If only a light meal or sugary food is eaten then yes you'd experience sickness an possible vomiting.
If you were to take this medication again then it's best to start on a low dose and build it up over a few weeks, it gives the body time to adjust.
And im not syptom free either .:-)
