Hello!

I've been dealing with erythema nodosum on my legs October and November, treating it with steroids (medrol). I thought that it ran its course, but now today I have another bump coming out on my leg. They get so painful that it is very difficult to walk. Is prednisone/medrol the typical way/best way to treat it? How do others cope with the pain it causes? It is beginning to seem that they appear when I start to try weaning off the steroids, which I've been on for a year now, most the time at 5 or 10 mg. Both my doctors and I want off of the steroids, but I can't quite shake the erythema nodosum yet. Any thoughts?

Hi, I hope your EN has resolved by now! I was recently diagnosed after undergoing a million tests and fearing Rheumatoid Arthritis. I'm hoping it will run its course but as soon as I think I'm doing better the pain starts in my knees and ankles and arms again. Before they knew what it was they gave me a mild steroid (Medrol dosepak) and I could walk in water. Once that was finished it came right back. Steroids are good and bad, they mask symptoms which can be detrimental if something worsens. I have been managing on the strong NSAID, diclofenac 75mg twice a day. I'm getting hot baths every night and trying to elevate my legs as much as possible.

Ouch! I know what you are going through! There is hope...it does eventually go away. I did the medrol dose pack thing, and just like you, it came right back. Long story, I ended up on 40 mg. of medrol and tapering down slowly...going back up another 4 mg when more bumps came out. I am now on 8mg. and still have two bumps on my ankles, but they are not bothering me. It's just something that runs its course. I did get a chest x-ray to double check it's not something else...cant remember exact name...starts with an s...
Careful with Nasids...I used vicodin... My doc always says to eat something along with those meds.

I've had (what I'm sure is them based on pics and description) for over 10 yrs on my one ankle...used to have them on both ankles and a couple on each hand too, but they all cleared up except for one ankle....don't know how the others cleared up but not the existing ones since they all came about the same time...very ugly (even though they're small)...I've been trying vitamin E and tea tree spray, slowly getting better, don't itch like crazy anymore at least.
