I had minor abdominal surger to remove a scar tissue adheason on my intestine three weeks ago and was intubated as well as concious when the NG tube was forcefully inserted into my nose. I had a terrible sore throat and weakish voice for a few weeks following discharge and have recently developed a pretty raspy voice. Sounds like I eat a pack of cigs a day. The surgeon blew it off on Friday as a possible complication of intubation and my GP thought possible infection. Four days of antibiotics and the pain is gone but the voice is worse some days and better others. Like I said it is three weeks out and I known is a known complication of breathibg tube during surgery but nowhere I read showed it shoulf linger this long. Has anyone had an experience like this before? I didnt have any issues before the surgery so I doubt there is a more serious inderlying cause.

After my last two surgeries when I was intubated, I had a sore throat and raspy voice for a week - 10days but 3 weeks seems too long. If it doesn't get better soon, I would get checked to make sure your vocal cords weren't damaged during intubation.

Hope you never need a NG tube again. But, if you do, I found an easier way......ask for a childs size NG tube, goes down a lot easier and still does the job. Feel better.

Easy for that surgeon to say. He isn't the one enduring the discomfort and possibly permanent damage.
I spent 6 weeks on an NG tube years ago. I finally ended up pulling the darn thing out myself. Sure enough! Three bloody rings right where I told the nurses and doctors it was hurting too much. The throat and esophagus healed but to this day I still have problems at the ridge in my nose - and a deviated septum I did NOT have before that prolonged bout w/the NG tube.
For starters they should not have started the intubation w/o a sedative or inserting it after you were under anesthetic. He will get away w/it tho because it is not "unusual" for NG tube insertion w/o sedation and anesthesia.

When they inserted mine, they told me I had to be awake for it because I had to swallow it down. It was awful. I threw mine up after three weeks. I had a hard time talking for a couple of days.

I had the NG for a week and a half but am suspecting it was the breathing tube during surgery that messed me up pretty bad.
