Prednisone and Birth Control Pills?

I was reading that birth control pills can increase the effects of steroids. Now I've told my GI that I take them, but it makes me worry since this was all done over the phone. I hope he realized I take them. I'm going to have to call there yet again tomorrow, just to make sure.

So I was just wondering if anyone else has been on the pill and took Prednisone at the same time? Was it okay?

It really stinks having so many questions, problems, going on and can't get in to see him for another week!

I'm taking entocort and I'm on birth control. I talked to my pharmacist about it and she said it wouldn't make that much of a difference - if it did make a difference, it would only enhance the effect of the entocort.

I took entocort while on the patch. I noticed I had more of the side effects coming off of the drug than normal. I never made a correlation to my BC though.

I took the pill and prednisone at the same time way back when I first got sick...seems to me now that you mention this (which I never knew) the pred worked better for me in my earlier yrs (while on the pill) than when I took it and was no longer on the pill...guess that's why it lost it's affectiveness with me.

Well then, maybe it will be a good thing! LOL I just worry because I'm on 40 mg, I hope that isn't too high with the birth control pills. I never would have even thought of that, the pharmacist made a point to read all that scary info that came with my pills. That's what I get for reading. LOL Oh well, another call to them tomorrow to make sure it's okay. That's what they get for not having an appointment for me soon! hehe

That's the standard amount which I was also on while taking the pill and to the best of my knowledge and experiance there were no negative issues, like I said, it was better when I was on the pill rather than off as far as pred went BUT the pill is something I don't miss as it did seem to exacerbate my symptoms worse...afterall there is a connection between hormones and exacerbation of IBD as well as IBS symptoms.

It'll be interesting to know what your doc says about it.

Thanks pb4, that's gonna help me sleep tonight (well with pred there isn't much of that anyway LOL). But it eases my mind! I'll report back with what he says!

Are you taking your pred first thing in the early morning? Because that can help tremendously with sleep issues at night.

Today I did, I took it at 8am. But over the last few days I was having to make it earlier and earlier. Monday I took it at 1:30pm, because that's when I picked it up, and they said get it on it right away. I think that may have messed me up a bit. So every day this week I started taking it an hour or two earlier. Hopefully I'll sleep better tonight.

Just wish there was a fix for these mood swing. :(

Ya, the earlier the better...don't worry, the mood swings will pass and everyone will just have to suffer LOL!

Just thought I'd update. I talked to the nurse and she said I was fine, while taking the birth control. She hopes I won't be on Pred for a long period of time anyway. We'll see about that. So that's one worry I can lay to rest. Still waiting on one blood test result, to make sure my angioedema (swelling) wasn't caused by some serious hereditary problem. I'm pretty sure it won't be, but it would be nice going in to the weekend not having that on my shoulders still as well.

wow its so good to know that there are other people with the same concerns as mine.about 2months ago i was on pred and started on the birth control pill as well.i had my period last month as normal and im no longer on pred but i have just been having that nagging feeling at the back of my mind that i maybe should not have taken the two at the same time.my mind is at ease now.lol wink

I've been on pred at least five times in the last seven years, plus Entocort once, and birth control the whole time, and I don't think I've ever noticed any issues other than the standard pred side effects. I will say that the longer you are on pred and the higher the dose, the more side effects you'll experience, so it's always a good idea to try to get off it as soon as possible.

just a mention..not so much on the increased side effects but one birth control I was on mentioned that it may not be as effective when taken with prednisone...prednisone was listed in the same area with the anti biotics and such on the little pamphlet inside the birth control. It may have been Alesse, but I am not 100% I double the pills I am on now to make sure there are no interactions.

My goodness this is an old post of mine! To think of all these years I'd been put on and off again the steroids while being on my birth control. On them again right now as a matter of fact. Never did notice any difference with being on the two. But yes, hate the steroids anyway. Hoping to soon taper and not take them again for a long time!
