I am assuming that thrush is another side effect of the prednisone. Just another pill to add to my daily count of 27. Thank goodness it's not painful. Back of my throat and tonsils are covered with the white nasty junk. Oh I just love having Chrons. :(

Try gargling with grape fruit seed extract(diluted to about
10 drops in 1-2 ounces). It is the only thing that worked for me. That and cutting out sugar and processed carbs. You an also try adding lots of raw garlic to your food, as garlic is known for its anti-fungal properties. The nystatin did nothing for me.
Trush stinks, sorry!! :(

Hello,
When my son got thrush last year the only thing that ended up clearing it was Diflucan, vigorous cleaning of the tongue and rinsing with mouthwash several times a day. You have to be careful as I remember the Dr. saying that it can spread throughout the body. He was taking vancomycin, budesnoide and 6mp at that time. It's hard to clear it up while on antibiotics but he took a probiotic as well about
four hours after taking the antibiotic.

Get a tongue scrapper, and be vigilant everyday. That seems to work best. There is a pill and spray combo that will also work very well, but I can't remember the names. I'm sure someone will chime in.

Thanks for the suggestions. My Dr called me in a prescript
ion for nystatin. Sure is a nasty liquid. I have a dentist appts next week and he wants him to check that it's clearing up. It doesn't hurt just annoying.

I got it from prednisone, too, a year or so ago. Awful sore throat! They gave me an anti-fungal and it cleared it right up.

I have had a couple of infants in my child care with it in the past year, one his mom took him in to the dr and got nystatin for it. It took a week to clear. Another one mom was having issues getting her daughters insurance reinstated so I asked her if I could try baking soda, I made a paste of about
a 1/8tsp and rubbed it as best I could on her lips and gums where the worst of it was(it was as far as she would let me get with it anyway and most of it was promptly spit out) The next day it was atleast 50% better I did it one more time and the following day it was completely gone. So the nystatin will be good for the yeast that may be lurking internally and you can't see but gargling with a solution of baking water 1-3x a day will yield faster results. This also works for female yeast infections, usually only takes one treatment and it is gone the next day vs 7-10 day treatments, factor in the cost of the creams it is a win win. Baking soda is safe if swallowed in small mounts but to be safe gargle atleast an hr before or after eating as it neutralizes stomach acid and will prevent proper digestion of food.

Hi Dingleeire
I was interested in your post.
How long did your son take the Diflucan for? What was the milligrams he taking? Have you ever heard of FLUCONAZOLE before? it is suppose to be the generic equivalent. Thanks for your post.

Hi HelloKitty,
My son had C-diff at the time and was taking Vancomycin he ended up getting thrush really bad in his mouth and in the back of his throat. I can't exactly remember how long he took it for but he had a couple of rounds of it as he had a long battle with C-Diff. I think it is taken for 14 days and that the strength was 50mg taken a couple of times a day in his case. It really did work well though and began to clear in a couple of days. I believe that Fluconazole is the generic brand of Diflucan.

Did the Diflucan do anything for his CD? I have believed in my past (don't know now) that UC and CD may have a lot to do with candida, I thought this because I went on an anti- candida diet and my symptoms began to improve; however, they no longer are.
Just curious.

Nystatin!!!
That's what I was trying to remember. It really works, but still use the tongue scraper.

HelloKitty,
I am not sure if the Diflucan helped with the crohn's or not as he had so much going on at the time with the C-diff and was hospitalized as well with intussusception. All I can tell you for sure is that the Diflucan cleared up the thrush real quick.
