My doctor thought I had a vaginal fistula because I have gas coming out through my vagina. I had some special cat scan that was suppose to detect the fistulas and it came up negative. I don't understand because I think I do have one. Has anybody had a cat scan that did not detect a fistula? What else could it be if it was not a fistula? I have had Crohns for 20 plus years, a anal fistula , resection with three fistulas.

I'm pretty sure you have a fistula. Gas and fecal matter passing through were my signs. Cat scans won't always show them, I don't think. I would suggest maybe a barium test.

I wasn't sure how to explain it well, so I went digging and found this awesome site on the Mayo Clinic about RV fistulas and tests for them.

I hope this helps and gives you some ideas! I haven't done any of these personally because mine was low enough that they could see it just doing a vaginal exam (at the bottom of the sphincter muscle). I have a draining seton in mine that I will probably leave there for a while. It almost healed completely last year when I started Remicade, but then I got c. diff. twice and pancreatitis several times, and all of that drama re-opened it.

Delicate question, if you have one in the vagina, are you still able to have sex? Could this be why I have so many yeast and bacteria infections? Do I talk to my gastrologist or my OBGYN about testing? I will check out the web site, thank you for that and also in advance with your answers and experiences.

Yes, I can still have sex, much to my husband's relief. :) I actually just had a baby this week and we did a c-section so I wouldn't tear. Just need to be careful with sex at times not to be super rough or sometimes need to change the angle. He doesn't even notice that it's there. It could definitely explain all of the infections. What kind of testing do you mean?

Hi, sorry I have not been to the site in a while. And thank you for answering! The tests to see if there is a fistula in my vagina. Congrats on the baby, I am happy for you! I thought I was menapausal, till this week. Oh well.
