Hello,

I have had Crohns disease now for 26 years I had my 4th colon resection this past May & have been off work since. I was hospitalized last weekend with C.Diff. I knew something was not right, lots of diarrhea & gurgling in my gut. I went to one hospital & they did blood work & said could be a flair up, then the next day downtown where I had my colon resection & they found C.Diff in my stool sample. I am now on high dose of prednisone & Flygl I just recently started Humira again last week. I am doing a quick taper down of the prednisone. I am just feed up with the soft stools. I have been trying the probiotics now. Has anyone gone through C.Diff & Crohn's disease?

Hi Sassmi,
You might want to go under the search bar and type in "c.difficile and Crohn's" and read old posts on this topic. I had c.diff a couple of years ago. I needed two rounds of Flagyl but I did get better. Vancomycin is another antibiotic used for c.diff. The immunosuppressants like Pred and Humira might make your c.diff infection harder to treat, but you very well may need both. I hope you feel better soon!

Thank you for replying back I hope I get back on track! I was getting into recovery mode after surgery & then this! I find if I eat a banana it helps bulk up stool & causes less bowel movements! I am taking lots of vitamins too. I just want my life back to normal!

Yes - shortly after my diagnosis (by colonoscopy), my CD seemed to get a LOT worse. I didn't know any better, so I struggled on through all the D and bleeding, assuming it was the disease. I had at least 4 stool samples done over those 6 months, all negative for anything.

It was only when I admitted myself to the hospital and my GI did a colonoscopy that a sample finally came back positive for C-Diff. I can't do Flagyl, so I went on Vancomycin which worked a miracle within a week. I had to remain on the antibiotic for about 2 months to eliminate the c-diff completely though.

Wow glad you are doing better. I am expected back to work in about a week & half... Still on the Flagyl & doing a bit better, no fever, no pain, just lose stool still. My GI is out of town for another week. so I need to follow up with him about my recent case this past horrible week

I had it 3 times in 2012. Flagyl stopped working, but vanco worked. It could be a combo of c. diff. and a flare.

Had C. diff after antibiotics for sinusitis. The diarrhea was totally different than that of a Crohn's flare. I was hospitalized because the C. diff caused hemorrhagic colitis - I was bleeding heavily. A 10 day course of Vancomycin didn't do much. Then had a 14 day course of Xifaxin which got rid of it. I also took probiotics while taking the Vancomycin but it seemed in my case to make it worse. I was taking Culturelle. Others have had great success with probiotics. I question taking the Humira and prednisone while infected with C. diff. I had to hold off on my biologic [Simponi] until my stool samples were clear. Hope you get relief soon!

yes i have experienced all of the above. mine was due to CD, and too landed in the hospital. its an awful feeling. things will get better soon

Hang in there you've had Crohn's disease since 2008? I have had it for 26, rule of thumb never let it control your life! I have had 4 colon resections, May being my most recent, I thank God it went well, I have had some minor setbacks & expected back to work in a couple of weeks, the C.Diff threw me off big time & I am recovering slowly. I have a huge appetite now, just trying to control the bowel movements. Bananas seem to work!!!

My son was diagnosed with moderate Crohn's August 2012 and we've brought it to remission with enteral therapy (i.e., tube feeding). He contracted c. diff in April 2013 and has treated it with metronidazole and two courses of vancomycin. It's back. His GI doc says he's a candidate for fecal transplant after three failed courses of vancomycin and because he's not on immuno-suppressant steroids. Questions:

1. Has anyone tried alternative methods?
2. What do you know about fecal transplants for pediatrics? What medical centers are doing them?

Are you in the US? Because last I heard, the FDA had put a hold on doing any fecal matter transplants so they aren't doing them anywhere right now (I believe).

Hi,

My son battled C-Diff for about 8 months finally got rid of it in March of this year. Took two rounds of flagyl and three rounds of Vanco also had a heavy dose of iv antibiotics when he was hospitalized in late January for intussusception. Crohn's did stay in remission thankfully but the C-Diff really drained all his energy. Like a new person since he got rid of it.

I had surgery in may to redue my stoma. I did great for 2 weeks after surgery and then I got
c-diff and my Crohn's was activated. We tried different antibiotics and nothing worked until vancomycin.
The c-diff has cleared but the Crohn's is still raging. I found out that surgery can activate c-diff and
Crohn's. I just tried cimzia and it did nothing for me. I just found out my insurance company has turned
down my doctors request for stalara so I am not sure what I do next. I had a total colectomy 6 years
ago and was disease and med free for six years. I hope your c-diff responds to flagyl but if not ask for
vancomycin.

I've been doing better & back at work. My Crohns is under control I was on 1500mg of Flaygl for almost 3 weeks hospitalized 6 days end of July. I'm back at work finally.its been a long 3& half months! My colon resection was May. 7 & thankfully I'm doing well. I hope the C.Diff is gone for good. I'm eating well & have gained some weight. My nephew was just diagnosed with Crohn's disease thinking his appendix was bothering him. He had a colon resection 2 weeks ago!
I'm sorry to hear about your stoma I hope things get better & your Crohns gets in control!

I was hospitalized 3 times in 6 months prior to my Crohn's diagnosis due to the clostridium infection. I had been flaring for about 3-4 mo. and came down with a bad respiratory infection which was treated with a strong antibiotic. That caused an overgrowth of the C. diff. and I wound up with sepsis. I was treated with Cipro and Mefoxin along with prednisone and IV steroids. It nearly killed me.

That was 18 years ago and I haven't had a repeat of being that sick. Hope you get better soon. -Joy

Hi I'm new here, I was Diagnosed with chrons in march 2013 after my colonscopy, I was then put on asacol and sent home but it only made it worse so I stopped taking it, I have since then started medicating myself with herbal products like colostrum and probiotics and I also started taking glutamin but I am worried about Antibiotics to treat the inflamation and I find I suffer with cramps so bad it wakes me up at 3 in the morning and then I can't go back to sleep. Any advise welcome thanks.

Hi chrons (you are spelling Crohn's incorrectly:) C.diff stands for clostridium difficile , which is a bacterial infection that is a common occurrence with people with Crohn's disease, either from using antibiotics, or from inflammation which causes bacterial overgrowth in the intestines.

Hello Chrons,

My son had very loose stool and it smelled really bad. If you suspect that you have you should get your doc to order a stool test to confirm it.

You should get a stool sample done, they will know right off the bat if you have C.Diff bacteria. You will have a gurgling sound in your tummy, not like normal Crohns cramps, bad diarrhea I had a bad taste in my mouth, no fevers but lots of diarrhea. I was on Flagyl for 3 weeks & now I am good, it is gone. How are you feeling?

I am fairly new here also. I am having episodes; of vomiting and diarrhea every 4-6weeks and/or constipation. Had scans and barium and emptying tests. Showed I had irregular digesting.. Took 3hours when it should have taken 90 minutes to digest. Was in hospital several times for theses symptoms. Almost always potassium goes up. Get dehydrated also. They did a test where I had to drink barium and then looked in my stomach and ileum for problems. Want to do a pillcam test now.took a extensive blood test and ruled out IBD'S. what else could it be? Anyone else with anything like this?

@Julz54 have you had a colonoscopy? Those tend to be best results in any case. Sorry you are not feeling well, hope it gets better

Yes, and an endoscopy. Everything was ok.
