Crohn's Disease Preganant Taking Imuran and Remicase

Hello all,

I'm currently pregnant and my GI keeps insiting there is no issue with taking Imuran and Remicade during pregnancy, I'm worried.  The more you read, the more anxious you become.  Since I'm considered high risk I already visited a neonatal specialists, she prefers to see patients with on medication, but his isn't may case now.  I'm 30, no other health issue other than Moderate to Severe Crohn's Disease since I was 17.

Has anyone taken Imuran during pregnancy?  Any insight, I'm nervous.

You can go to infantrisk.org and read about the different meds safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. I'm sure remi is ok, not so sure about imuran.

I didn't take Imuran, but I did take Remicade and my daughter was born a month ago. She was small, but that was more from the severe hyperemesis (morning sickness) that I had the whole time. We did a c-section at 37 weeks because my Remi was due then and I was already starting to flare a bit so we didn't want to delay. I also have a rectovaginal fistula that won't heal that has a draining seton that we didn't want to risk tearing even more. We just did the infusion the day after while I was still in the hospital. You don't want to do them after 32 weeks. She can't have any live vaccines until after 6 months, and we're very careful about taking her out in public. So far we've only gone to the doctor.

From what I've heard, Imuran is ok. There are tons of "could-be" for any medication while pregnant. But a flare while you're pregnant can cause a miscarriage, so the general consensus is that it's worth the risk to stay on your meds to try to stay in remission.

I agree with the above - I think the most important thing is to stay in remission throughout your pregnancy. I was on Humira throughout mine and my son was born full term and perfectly healthy. I used the Humira right up to and after his birth.

I think you can go off the Imuran for your pregnancy and then go back on after you have the baby. Remicade is not really a drug you can stop and then start back up again. So that is always an option if you want to decrease your meds a little. Good luck!

I just gave birth to twin boys 12 days ago and I was on remicade during my entire pregnancy.  I received my last infusion at 35 weeks and am due to have my next one on Wednesday.  I've never taken Imuran so I am of no help there but if your gi and ob feel it's safe then I would suggest continuing to take your meds.  It's much more harmful to flare during your pregnancy then any side effect of the drugs.  Good luck to you :-)
