I am starting a new drug called 6mp. Does anyone have any opinions or experience with this medication? I have been on Humira, Remicade, Imuran, and many other medications in the last 3 years. With no success. Most of the auto immune drugs I have been allergic to, so I am a little nervous to start this one. I have had Chrons for 16 years now, and Diabetes for 14 years. Its hard managing both, and frustrating finding the answers.

6MP is what Imuran is metabolized into by the body. Some people that didn't tolerate Imuran do fine on 6MP. I read in your other post that you tried Imuran previously. What problem did it cause you.

I have not taken 6MP but did take Imuran for 8 years.

I didn't have any problems with the Imuran. I was on it for about 8 or 9 months, and after reviewing my labs the Dr. Decided to take me off because they did not see any improvements in the activity of chrons. But in light of the severe allergic reactions I have had with the Remicade and Humira, They have decided to try this 6mp. He has made me feel like he is running out of options to treat my chrons

I took 6mp and it landed me in the hospital for 4 weeks. It caused me to have a toxic liver that almost shut down. I also had my gall bladder removed. While the surgeon was doing that he drained 3 liters of fluid from around my liver that the liver couldn't process. Now I am waiting on the liver to heal before we try something else. I hate crohns. Hopefully the 6mp works for you. The side effects are different for everyone.

I took 6MP and Imuran, and had a reaction to both. I monitor my symptoms closely, and recommend you do the same with any changes you might see.

I had flu-like symptoms within a few short days with both. One caused a migraine and side blindness (my vision kind of started to close in), and the other just made me feel like crap.

Thank you for the insight and what to look for. My allergic reactions have been similar to the flu like symptoms with the humira but the remicade was much worse, it ave me paralysis of all my muscles and joints and severe lock jaw, and the worst was it didn't happen until 2 weeks after I started on the remicade. I had previously taken it foralmlst a year with no major problems, but this last time my body rejected the mouse protein. I had a resection done in 2004, and was in remission for 10 years. But this go around seems to be much worse. Everything the Dr. Has put me on is not touchi g it. A lot of pain most days. I have steadily lost wait and am down from 145 to 105 and can only tolerate liquids like ygurt and applesauce right now. And even that makes me so naseous that I am on zofran daily to keep it down. I agree with dybeye... I hate crohns. Thank you for your help though, I will make sure I am being tested regularly with the labs.

I just started 6MP a few weeks ago and haven't had any reactions so far that I can tell. I have had flu like symptoms and stomach pain, which are standard side effects, but I have those with my Crohn's anyways, and the 6MP hasn't made those any worse.

My doctor had me do a test before he put me on the 6MP to make sure I wasn't allergic to it because he said like 1/200 people are allergic and have a severe reaction to it. Hopefully your GI did the same! Then, after 2 weeks, he had me go in and have more lab work done to test my liver because, again, not everyone can tolerate it, and my liver test came back fine. Again, you should make sure that your doctor is also following that same protocol, especially with all the reactions you've had to other things.

While tolerating it ok, I haven't had any improvement in my Crohn's since I've been on the 6MP In fact, my labs showed that my white blood cell count and platlet count went up (ie that the inflamation has increased). But, according to my doctor, it takes a few months to kick in, so I'm praying it will help eventually.

I've had a pretty positive experience with 6MP. I've been on it for a year and have not had any symptoms of Crohn's (or UC, not really sure which I have) for the last 9 months or so. I was on prednisone too when I first started the 6mp since 6mp can take a few months to start and i was having a bad flare. I tapered off the pred and have been stable on 6mp. I am still taking Colazal, though irregularly.
I had some nausea for the first month or so but that stopped. My hair was also falling out more than usual, but again that stopped after about a month.
I get my blood drawn regularly to check liver function, white blood count. One blood test showed mild elevation of the liver enzymes so I went down to a lower dose of 6mp- labs have been normal since. Make sure you get your blood checked regularly.

I have been on 6MP for about 12 years now with NO problems.  I had tried Remicade and it did not work for me.  6MP has maintained my CD symptoms and I have not had any adverse reactions to it in any way.  I call it my miracle drug!  It does lower your immune system, but not into a danger zone.  I have blood work done every three months to monitor my white blood count.  It can also mess with your liver so yearly I have blood work for that.  Again - I have had no problems with any of this.  If it messes with your liver you can stop taking it and it will stop.
