HUmira and Flaring

Husband is on remicade, not humira, but they are sister drugs. He's had a flare up while on remicade. He was on 5mg/kg of remicade every 8 weeks. When he flared, they put him on a round of steroids to calm it down. They doubled his dose to 10mg/kg of remicade every 8 weeks to prevent future flare ups. Since they doubled his dose, he has not flared again.

So, they maybe able to keep flare ups at bay by adjusting the dosage of humira. I believe the normal dose is once every 2 weeks, but if you flare, they may move you up to once every week.

But it isn't uncommon to have break through flare ups while on remicade or humira or cimzia. Hopefully they are milder, and can be brought under control quickly. This was my experience with my husband. When not on remicade, his flare ups were horrid; very intense. On remicade, the flare up was reasonably mild, he wasn't in agony, and a short course of steroids made it go away.

If you are flaring, I hope you feel better very soon. I don't see humira on your sig line, so maybe you are investigating starting it?

Yes, I currently am having some minor abdominal discomfort and gurgling, (mild flare for me). This one is very mild compared to anything I've experienced though-I've had a hellish past few months since my bowel resection in May. All of my flare ups have led to bowel obstructions and hospitalizations. I am however concerned of some symtoms I get right after injections. I also am tapering down off of prednisone and a few of the flare ups have followed after a rigorous workout or days where my water intake was less than normal. So, these few "flares" are mild and feel like the beginnings of flare ups I've experienced in the past and might just be dehydration? Right before I prepare for any horrible cramping that's about to come, I'm able to up my water intake and a few hours later I feel back to normal. I get a lot of gurgling sounds later on though and soon those do go away.

So far, I feel like it's doing its job. I'm only on my 6th week though. I was to start Cimzia, but my insurance said I had to fail at Humira first. I did all of my research on Cimzia, which seems to be a very comparable injection, but I can't help but wonder if I'd get the same reactions (swelling of hands, face and feet) for the first four days after my injections like I do with Humira. Anyone else get this?

Hi, new to the forum but wanted to respond to this as it is especially timely for me.

Ran through remicade, then started on Humira 40 every 2 weeks, then 40 every week now 40 twice a week. My doctor, a very prestigious man from Mt. Sinai put me on antibiotics full time, I have been on it for about 3 months and am starting to lose steam.

My doctor said once the flares start happening with Humira/Remicade it is important to introduce another therapy (ie: anti-biotics). Hope you start to feel better

I've been on it since June, and it helped at first, but I'm still flaring. I'm waiting to get in to see my GI doctor to see what else we can do. I'm just having pure liquid D and joints are painful. So it's not helping much. Right now I'm taking a pain pill here and there to get through the days.
