For Females - How's your Crohn's around your period?

Tracking the ebs and flows of this disease with my daughter I am noticing harder times starting right when she gets her period and for about 5-6 days.

Anyone else have issues around their cycle? Is this just me seeing this?

Hi, my period is approaching and that's why I started having severe cramps and diarrhea. A week before my period my symptoms start. When I first started having Crohn's 6 years ago, I used to rush to my GI thinking I have a flare up. He was convinced then I had a flare up coz of the symptoms and the pain and as it lasted a week before the period. I associated the pain to my cycle. All I do now is taking antispasmodics and skipping meals. I try to depend in my diet on Ensure as my stomach is not well these days. The first day of my period is a real torture. I try to control my pain by taking a painkiller injection (ketrolac) though I know that it might trigger a flare up and my GI is totally against it but nothing other than it can control the pain.
A gynecologist told me before that menses makes all the abdominal area inflamed. That's why some of us feel that pain before the period.

I always get worse around my period, and this is even with remission. Things just go haywire the week before but then return to normal the day after it stops. I just try to work through it the best I can and hang in there. I am on birth control so I know when it's coming, and that does help.

Glad (in a way) it isn't just me seeing this. Would birth control help reduce the reaction? Anyone try it?

Once I started suppressing my periods by taking birth control continuously, and only having one or two a year did I notice a difference in my CD symptoms around my period. Even before I had CD I would often get diarrhea around my period, but it was far worse once I developed CD.

I'm finally in remission now, and have since stopped taking birth control pills, and things aren't as bad.

That's positive. Something for me to discuss in the next year or two with my daughter. Nt quite ready to imagine my kid on birth control. She is no where interested in sexual activity yet and would only be considering it for crohns. Glad it made a difference for someone though.

I feel horrid the first few days of my period and have increased D. There is conflicting info about hormonal BC helping, as some think it actually hurts. I am afraid to go on BC for this reason and just suffer thru for a few days.

Yep, I always had mini flare before and during my period. And when perimenopause hit me I had issues hemmorageing so my gyne suggested a mirena IUD -- I love it. You may not be ready to think of your daughter on BC but personally for me if it was a quality of life issue I'd give her that option. JMHO.

 I also have horrible menstral cycles ! It starts a week before my actual period comes. I get real sick. I am on promethazine for my upset stomach 2 weeks out of the month just because of my period, thats not including my Apriso for CD & my normal medication. I do have to take a lot of midol these days also. It is awful. Try to give her MIDOL COMPLETE the white ones that seems to help with the worse cramping, body aches, stomach issues. Its worth a try.

My period is ALWAYS flares up my symptoms. My OBGYN had put me on constant birth control to stop my periods and it really helped. Its an option you may want to look into. Now that I am don having kids we are stopping my cycle completely with an ablation. I know your daughter is way too young for that but the birth control may help her.

I am like sparkle and have completely suppressed my periods through the pill (after awhile of continuous pill taking, you often just stop having periods, even if you take a few days off, because the uterine lining has gotten so thin). Even if I stop taking the pill for a single day, I will have migraines and GI symptoms, so I tend to not do it unless I feel there is a real reason. There is no medical reason for you to have a period, so I choose not to, and my body is much happier for it.

ARG I WISH I'd come here years ago... it's so good to hear I am not alone. My periods are so bad I literally cannot move when they hit. I have to take 4-6 30mg codeine just to function. Which means I don't really (function) as I am on heaps of codeine. I also tend to drink spirits on that first, horrific day of the bleeds! It really is the worst pain. A (female) nurse told me that since your gut is super close to all your internal lady bits that it makes sense that they affect each other. I was so annoyed as I have been chasing an explanation for my painful periods for years but no Dr seemed to put two and two together... grrrr.

Yes it is worse. But I hear when we go through menopause it burns its self out. Can only hope!
