My husband was diagnosed with Crohn's disease in early August. His doctor's say it is a very aggressive case and he has already had 2 surgery's since then to remove 2 feet of intestine. He was able to get his ostomy removed 2 weeks ago though. The doctor's are putting him on IV Remacade(sp?) and another oral pill since his case was so severe.

Now to my question. The doctor says that since it came on so quickly and he has no prior history, and no family history that our daughter has a very slight chance of getting Crohn's. But that if we have another they have a much higher risk..

This is all very new to us and very scary, we had planned on having another child sometime next year. Is all this true? Has anyone else had this type of case and had children after? I am looking for advise

The odds of having a child with an inflammatory bowel disease are higher if a parent has IBD, but they aren't anything like a certainty. There is evidence that Crohn's has a genetic component but it is not a strong one (the only one in my family with Crohn's besides me is my 2nd cousin - I have two siblings, three first cousins on that side of the family and five 2nd cousins on that side of the family, so that's 1/10). My 2nd cousin's disease is pretty aggressive and mine is not.

Don't live your life in fear. I have 2 healthy children that have showed no signs of CD or any other autoimmune disease. I had signs of CD my entire life. Enjoy each day and don't let CD control it. Blessings and prayers that your husband gets some relief and to more children!

Hi Same here as the post above I too have two healthy grown up children who thank god have never had any signs of this disease or any other I have had crohns since I was a teenager x

I have been blessed with two healthy children and I have severe CD. I consulted with my GI and OBGYN and neither where concerned about CD being passed down to my children. I have a big family and I am the only one who has it. I hope this makes you feel better.

I've heard both sides from people with Crohns, and I really don't know if we can say with certainty that it *is* genetic.

I have a CD friend who has a sister with crohns as well, but their other sister doesn't have it and neither does her mom or dad.

My aunt has CD. My cousins do not. I have CD, but my aunt and I are not blood relatives. None of my blood relatives have CD/UC.

I've had CD since age 10. My husband since age 14. We are the only ones in both our families, but I am pregnant with our first. There are good chances that our kid will have Crohn's. But since we've been dealing with it our entire life, we are confident that if our kid does get it, it will be ok. The treatments now are much better than when *I* was diagnosed! Crohn's sucks, but it's not the end of the world. We are planning on having more than 1 too...
