Better luck with the move and a new set of doctors. I think it's appalling when doctors don't explain anything; I had doctors like that for years. Never again. Luckily my current GI is quite communicative for an NHS consultant, plus I know more about what to ask. But at the very least, you are entitled (by law) to see your own medical records. Your fiance needs to know the basic facts about his disease, like where it's located! The location and type of disease will influence treatment decisions to some degree, particularly if surgery is required.
For example, big betty mentioned enteral nutrition. That's been proven to work better for small bowel disease than colonic disease (though may still be worth a try in the latter case).
As for Asacol, the active ingredient in that is mesalamine. You should be able to find generic mesalamine from a Canadian pharmacy, or wherever, for a fraction of the price. But I think stronger meds will be required, especially if it's Crohn's and not UC (mesalamines are not so good for Crohn's, unfortunately. But for colonic disease they are still probably better than nothing).
One last word: if your boyfriend is losing that much blood, he is probably anaemic and will require iron supplementation (maybe in the form of iron transfusions). When you move to the new place, he should have a new set of tests done: bloods, colonoscopy, etc. I really hope he gets a decent doctor this time.
