Flagyl? A good thing or a bad thing?

After an emergency room visit for severe abdominal pain I was given no diagnosis at all, just a few possibilities.

The doctor on call rang a surgeon who told him to put me on Flagyl and hook me up with a gastroenterologist.

As it turns out, they forgot to include it when they sent me on my way but my question is why on earth would they prescribe Flagyl if my blood work revealed no elevated white cell count?

I have mixed feelings on flagyl. Initially it helped when mt primary care dr prescribed it to get me thru tell I saw the gastro for the first time. Then I mentioned to the gastro dr I felt better so they extended the treatment till they could get me n for my colonoscopy. By the end of the two week cycle I was so nauseous and sick I could hardly stand it. My guess is for me small doses are ok but I can't be on it for more than a week.

I never ever ever take antibiotics unless I know I have a bacterial infection usually signified by an elevated white cell count.

Antibiotics not only kill the bad bacteria but can also kill and deplete the good bacteria throughout our intestinal track.

My father died as a result of taking antibiotics when it was not necessary....he had flu which was caused by a virus not a bacteria. Because he was unwell with flu, combined with his intestinal track wiped of the good bacteria he developed a condition called Steven Johnson Syndrome...he developed Pseudomembranous colitis which required him to have a subtotal colectomy but it was all too late...he died eventually just two weeks later of multi organ failure.

So although antibiotics are good, used inappropriately they can be deadly.

Sometimes Flagyl can be helpful for some. It jump-started my remission. But after taking a course of Flagyl over 3 years ago I have stayed away from antibiotics. They can have serious side effects. Like prednisone it should be used short term only, don't get dependent on it.

While on Flagyl I took S. Boulardii which is a probiotic yeast that is immune to antibiotics. It remains in your colon to help keep bad guys away such as C. Diff. After the Flagyl I have been taking supplements, especially probiotics, every day. That and monitoring my diet for food triggers such as gluten and shellfish has kept me pretty much in remission.
