Very elevated liver enzymes....

Hi everyone,

I've posted about my liver enzymes before, but was wondering if anyone else had feedback. about a week ago I got a call from my doctor that pretty much all of my liver enzymes are elevated....in particularly my ALP, AST and ALT are high....about double what they should be. It's been a week and they are still pretty much at the same level. I had an abdominal CT scan and they said everything looks normal....but anyway I am pretty concerned and have no idea what could be causing these levels to be so elevated.

I was on 6MP but stopped taking it about a month ago....my liver enzymes were a little high, but much lower than this while on 6MP. I started taking 40 mg of prednisone after a flare and am still on that, but that's really the only change. Anyone had this happen to them before? Any idea what to do?

I was going to ask if you were on 6mp, but you answered that. You would think they would be lower since you stopped the 6mp. I don't know what could cause it to stay that high. Did your doc have any suggestions or thoughts on why they are so high?

I'm wondering if the Prednisone could be causing the elevated liver enzymes? I think it's a good sign that your CT looks normal, but your doc should be explaining this and looking into it for you. When do you have your next appointment?

Yeah it's really weird because you would think my liver enzymes would be getting way better after being off the 6MP....but clearly not.

My doctor is currently out of the country, but the on call doctor essentially said that he cant really explain it since my CT scan looks totally normal. They want me to repeat my blood work again in 2 weeks and see if things get better, my next appointment with my doctor isn't until January 14th....It's just kind of scary to have such high liver enzymes with no explanation at all....

I had extremely high elevated liver enzymes due to methotrexate. This was picked up when I started to flare at the end of October. My levels took a long time to come down after stopping the mtx, and some levels (GGT and ALT) are still up. I was told that it can take a while for everything to get out of your system so they can return to normal.

Thank you for the feedback. I guess I'll just have to wait a couple of weeks and see if they get better....it's just kind of scary.

I have this now and on and off for a while. Imuran was my problem and then Humira and it continued after it stopped. I changed my diet drastically and watch everything I put in my mouth. Mine were better at my last check but still elevated. I have Latent TB after being on Humira and Lupus and can't treat anything because of the Liver. I think it could be the prednisone. I would ring your pharmacist or doctor and talk about it.
