Hi,  Just were wondering if anyone has gone through having a lot of time off work and there work giving them another job to do when going back to it. I have been off work first March for 5 weeks, then August for 5 weeks, and now in September for surgery for 3 months.  I work in a daycare centre and was told I will not be returning to my room but doing another job ( I assume floating from room to room). Has anyone experienced this?  Can you get fired for taking lots of time off due to health? Thanks a million!

Yes, I was diagnosed this November and had to take almost a week off while I was in the hospital (being diagnosed), and then got strep throat on Thanksgiving so took another 2 days off :/ According to ADA, you CANNOT fire someone due to illness (unless reasonable accommodations cannot be made for them), but the new owner of the vet clinic I was working at is a **** and fired me anyway, claiming that I was not "reliable" due to my new illness. This is just my particular situation, and sometimes it will vary due to factors like "at will employment", but if your spidey senses are tingling, get out/quit as fast as you can unfortunately :( I quit my other job at a natural grocery store right after I was diagnosed but before I was fired at the clinic, so I can get that job back AND slap the clinic with a lawsuit should I feel the need..

Look into information about FMLA.

I was a teacher, and last year I was so sick I only taught for 6 weeks out of the entire school year (I had a feeding tube and was hospitalized for most of it). They couldn't cancel my contract for 6 months. I felt really guilty about it, but I needed the health insurance.

From what I understand, legally if you have excessive absences from work and are considered "unreliable" they can let you go. Unless, you are covered by FMLA and have missed days due to your illness. I have been having issues with my job as well. I work as a therapist in a mental health clinic, and have missed so many days due to CD. I actually put in my resignation a couple months ago but took it back after feeling better on Humira. I was told recently that if I continued to miss, I would be written up and then eventually, let go. I have had clients complain about canceling their appointments due to my illness and have exhausted all my PTO. People are so unaware or have lack of compassionate it seems to me for us people who suffer from CD.

I had to apply for disability bc I have so many issues from stupid crohns. I dream of being able to return to work one day... If you are having major crohns issues and not able to work and your GI stands behind you, consider filing for disability.

I have been off since April 2013 and I'm still no closer to going back to work, took 5 months to get a diagnosis and since then the meds just haven't worked. I haven't heard from work in months and I've been off so long that I don't get sick pay anymore. I think I have probably lost my job and no one has told me. I'm a nurse so there is no way I can go back until I'm completely well, there is no light duties in my job. I've been advised to apply for sickness/disability benefits but was told I would have to have an assessment to prove I was ill and I don't know how I can prove I have stomach pain, diarrhoea, nausea etc... I'm now so stressed because I have no money coming in, and I was only at my job for 2 months before going off sick, so they can't give me a very good reference when I do apply for a new job.

Hi this is a message really in relation to Kay 2013 post yesterday...although my heart goes out to each and everyone of you suffering. I have been ill since 2008 on and off for months. 2013 I had lots of time off work..I was a practice nurse and to cut along story short my employer were not very supportive at all over the ladt 2 years..I did my best to work when ever I could and would crawl in if I could..... but 2013 my manager made it quite clear I was letting the team down being off...so I would stay in my treatment room- throw up in the sickbowls, run to the toilet and lay on the bed to try and get through the day....My manager use to have sly digs at me even though he knew and could see how poorly I was...The letters started to arrive about my sickness rate and wanted to finish me on the grounds of incapacity to be a practice nurse. I involved the RCN who were supportive - so it might be an idea to do so. I ended up resigning from work as they were going to write on my P45 incapacity to be a practice nurse NOT incapacity due to ILLNESS...as I did not want it on my records....and only left as I knew deep down they could only hold my job open for so long... Employers are not aloud to write anything negative that could prevent you getting another job. I was heartbroken when I left my job as it was my dream job....although its really hard financially adjusting you do...I am now in receipt of ESA and DLA....I have just landed a job as a specialist nurse and now having a flare up so hoping it goes before I start my new post as ive been out of work a year!!!..Be kind to yourself, also realistic- at least with nhs occupational health will be on your side and fight your corner as well as rcn!! I have lost two jobs because of the illness one in 2005 and one in 2006. The problem with each is although I had a valid medical excuse I had signed a contract with each call center. Long story short I broke the contract and it was my decision to sign it Vs looking for another job. I don't really read those things to close to be honest. I did manage to get Employment insurance after the first dismissal however. The first place I had worked for for 3.5 years or so ! and before they got bough out by a new firm they were golden to me in 2003 my 2nd year. I missed loads of time including a 2.5 months absence due to admission to hospital and surgery etc . They were always really concerned and accommodating once the other company took over we had new contracts. I only missed over a year 12 days. They told me I had 24 hours to get a note and take a leave of absence I Kinda have a bad temper so I told them to fluff off and they fired me on the spot :P Cause the bottom line was I was always going to have this risk of missing time, it wasn't like after a leave I would be all better forever.
