Scarded of Colonscopy

I was diagnosed with Crohns Disease years ago, but because I hadn't any medical insurance, the doctor said "as long as it was letting me alone, we'd leave it alone."Because I've had some new symptoms, it prompted me to find a capable gi. And this doctor seems really nice and down to earth, knowledgeable, and he calls me HIMSELF when he has instructions for me to follow, etc.

To make a long story short, he scheduled me for my first colonoscopy Monday. And I am scared so bad. I have high anxiety and am worried about things going wrong. My mom has had one...my mom in law has had one. But when they called me and asked me the "Normal questions" and told me the risks involved, I just want to bolt and cancel. But it's been a good...15 + years of me having this disease..and I'm afraid I'm in a catch 22 situation...If I let it go, it might be causing problems, if I need meds, he needs to see how bad it is...yet if I cancel, I'll always worry what he might have found. I keep hoping my first doctor misdiagnosed me but they found it through a biopsy when I had my colon resection years ago.

Can anyone please, please reassure me how easy they are? Tell me I'm making a mountain out of a mole hill, something >.< All this worry isn't helping me stay calm. I'm doing the split prep btw. So any stories, advice, anything is more than welcome. Thank you.

Thank you for answering, Minnie. This helps some. I was thinking of asking them to use a Pediatric one, I read that sometimes if you think you have a weak intestinal wall, it might be a thing to consider. If he's willing, I might go that route.

It was the fact I had a colon resection that I think is making me really worry. Afraid it's going to get stuck or something. Or not be able to get anywhere. I think the split prep should be better than the usual prep? Not as much liquids to drink at one time.

BUt I get a feeling, if this comes out clear, he's going to want to schedule an upper gi. Or endoscopy. I know I have a problem somewhere along my digestive line. I have GERD also. Ihad my illuem area removed, but thats at the very end of my colon I guess. So hope things go well. Would love to hear more please.

And I'm on a clear liquid diet Sunday and nothing before except the prep on Monday. Which is icky, cause my son has a birthday party Sunday to go which I have to take him too and the woman cooks such great food. xD lol but if thats the worst that happens is I can smell it but not eat it, good.

Magi, my mom, uncle and aunt have all had colonoscopies and of course me with no issues. My mom and aunt and uncle were just due to have them for screening while mine was to detect crohns
My colposcopy came back clear as well and I have had bowel issue for going on 12 to 13 years now. It was not until 2010 that this beast really hit me with chronic ongoing pain. But the colonoscopy showed no scarring or damage luckily for me, I think that overall that has kept my complications down more so than others on here.
He all drew immunology type blood work and I had to be scheduled for a barium swallow for conclusive dx. I can tell you I hated the barium swallow. I have a super horrible gag reflex and the stuff they make you drink while not nasty really is just thick and hard to choke down. Plus it bloats you. The dr had to keep giving me breaks so I would not throw it back up. And oddly enough you would think the barium would have moved quickly for X-rays given on any normal day I have 3-5 bowel movements. Oh no..my happy butt had to get up in the hospital gown (I still had my jeans on) and walk around the area to get the barium moving, people in the corridors and waiting room started to look at me like a psych patient that had escaped after my fourth or fifth trip around. I thought it would be hilarious to add a neck tick as I passed by just to amuse myself but never did...hehhehehe as you can see I have learned to find the humor. If I didn't it I would be such a depressed person!

... Once a month, Ashley? Eesh. I can't even imagine, but I'm sure that once you have it done enough, it becomes almost "routine" and you get used to it. Thanks for telling me though, it's helping alot. Most of my problem is the stupid side effects they have on the prep stuff and the call from the hospital telling me about the "risks." I really would rather they dont. >.< I am pretty much afraid of alot these days.

and Cute, lol I wish I could find the humor in things too. I had a surgery to get a growth cut out of my nose like 2 years ago..and wound up being awake during most of it? The doc and assistants were talking about the Fantastic Four movie. So there I was, laughing and chiming in my two cents, they thought it was cute that I wasn't freaking out and stuff. Least now I can laugh about it all. I wasn't in pain, wasn't worried, and that too was the twilight I think. Once I get through it, I'll be able to look back and say how crazy I was for being so worried, I'm sure. But thanks for letting me know. :)

Good to hear you're in remission, Fantasia! Not so good you spent alot of time in the hospital. I honestly shouldn't have let my Crohns go as long as I did, but when I found out, I was sort of in denial. I didn't want to accept it. Then again, hoping they say "Oh, you're old doctor was wrong." But the chances of that, yeah...considering they discovered it through a biopsy is slim to none right?

I just need to quit reading the side effects of things. BUt thanks for the assurance. Making me feel kinda crazy for being afraid. xD I'll feel better hopefully come Tuesday

I make sure they knock me out! The anesthesiologist always gives me something to really calm me down which almost knocks me out. Then I think they use the Michael Jackson drug. Don't feel a thing. Wake up...fart a lot and go home. The prep sucks and your butt hole starts to burn like the dickens oh and I get really dehydrated. But they give me an Iv once they can find my collapsed vein. Once they knock you out you'll be out in seconds. A lot of folks like the twilight but I tell em to knock my butt out!
