Azathioprine & fasting blood glucose

At my recent work health check, I was told my fasting blood glucose was high (112) & recommended I get an A1C test. This was the first time this has happened so of course I automatically suspect my meds. I usually take the Azathioprine at night. I bought a glucose meter to try to figure things out & found that since I have switched to taking the Azatioprine in the morning instead of at night/bedtime, the level is down (100/101). Has anyone else had this happen or have you read/heard of anything similar? Also, it appears that exercise causes it to spike (taken ~ 15 - 20 minutes after exercising).

Hi Rob, I don't know about the azathioprine causing the rise in blood sugar but exercising can do that if you take your blood sugar within an hour or so because activity needs energy and normally it gets your blood sugar to rise for that reason. The A1c blood test will tell you what your average blood sugar has been over 90 days. A non-diabetic's will be in the 5's. The only way to see if you really do have a problem with blood sugar (ie being diabetic) is to do a Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT).

Lanie, thanks for your reply & info. I wasn't certain how long to wait after exercising to check it. This gives me more to research before seeing my PCP. Changing WHEN I take the Azathioprine & the lower glucose level may be a coincidence, but am hoping my GI can give me more info when I see him at the end of this month...
