Dumping syndrome after surgery?

Hi all,

I had a roux-en-y gastrojejunostomy that bypasses approx. 40 cm of my duodenum due to a stricture from crohns. Also, a resection of my terminal ileum. Approx 20 cm. I feel I may have dumping syndrome. After surgery I noticed that when I have a bowel movement it is usually loose but mostly solid. Today was my first day back at work. I had a cup of coffee and took my adderall xr 15mg today. I was in the bathroom 5 different times. Could this really be dumping syndrome? Or, could it be the adderall? Is there anything I can take to make it stop? I just had the surgery on 3/3/14. Any thoughts?

I can only relate to the resection of the TI, which I had done on 2/24/14 and about the same length as you. At about the post op 2 week mark I started to have 4-5 or more bowel movements each day that were loose, this continued for about a week. I have since added a fiber supplement at the direction of my surgeon and things have been improving. I would suggest you speak with your surgeon if you haven't already, definitely don't take anything to make it stop until you speak with your dr.

Thanks Caia! It's weird how we both had the same problem exactly two weeks post op. I called my surgeon's nurse practitioner. She doesn't think it's c diff but wants me to get a sample to be sure. This way I can take Imodium and get on with my life.

They certainly don't warn you about this stuff after surgery.

Cholestyramine works for post op diarrhea by soaking up the excess bile salt in your GI... worked wonders for me
