I'm sorry about your mother. Getting gastic cancer was supremely unfortunate. But that's not actually the same thing as a peptic ulcer.

I didn't say a word about your son's condition. As for lack of IBD in your family, there's a recessive IBD gene. Recessive means it can skip a few generations, so there's a possibility there might have been ancestors who've had Crohn's or UC that you didn't know about.

Hygiene and germs may have something to do with Crohn's, but again, nothing which has been proven.

As far as I'm concerned, we are decades or centuries away from a cure for Crohn's. I do not expect to see a cure in my lifetime.

Oh dear, I just have to laugh a little bit about the drama and tension on this thread. :) We all have our opinions about Crohn's and its causes, treatments, etc. Let's just all make sure we're being respectful of each other and responding to each others' comments the way we'd want someone to respond to ours (lol, yes, yes, the Golden Rule).

I'm grateful that we have this forum where we can all share our ideas and get help and support from each other. I know it would have been a million times more difficult to go through this without being able to ask questions of or vent to others who know what I'm going through. We all have a crappy disease (yes, ridiculous pun intended there!), so let's try to make it easier for each other instead of more difficult or miserable in the way we speak to each other.

Side note: I am NOT calling anyone out or making any kinds of accusations at all. I just don't want this thread to go down a path that leads to heated tempers. I don't think anyone is quite there yet, and I'd like to keep it that way because I like the information I'm getting from both sides on this thread and I would hate to see it locked. :)

Nobody is more pissy than a bunch of grumpy Crohnies. The UC board gets touchy too. I appreciate everyone's input even if it's conflicting because it helps me to know more and be more aware. I drank unpasteurized cows milk as a kid! (Hippie mom who thought she was doing right by giving us raw milk) and now I have Crohns. So, does one of my other siblings, who drank the milk. I have always wondered if MAP bacteria set this whole ball rolling. Then again, I have auto-immune issues I inherited. So... Which came first? The genetic propensity towards an illness? And then MAP flipped the switch? I don't know. But I appreciate the dialogue, even when passionate because it proves that even when we disagree, we are deeply concerned for our health and a potential cure.

"More importantly, our study identified specific organisms that are abnormally increased or decreased in disease, which forms a blueprint to develop microbial therapeutics."

Not sure about you guys, but I know Dr Xavier knows a bit more about IBD then I (and probably you). So if he says this can lead to better diagnostics and theraputics, I think I will take him at his word and be happy for it.

I'm sorry to jump in here bob but I know it must be frustrating to have a child with something like this and to not feel like there is anything you can do. But I do notice from your signature that since being on remicade your son has gained 70 pounds and grown 12in thats amazing news it means something must be going right. I M on remicade as well and it has kept me out of the hospital for over a year. I happen to be hlab27 positive. Which has been linked to succeptability to auto immune diseases. Noone else in my family has ibd

It's good to hear that remi is helping, and we hope it keeps going for my boy. If I thought it was a cure, I'd be thrilled. I still start to worry if he's in the bathroom for any length of time. Every advancement or discovery is one step closer to a cure. Good luck.
