azathioprine increase dose and really painful bloating

I've been on Aza for 3 weeks only 50mg. My doc today told me to up it to 150mg. I had my usual 50mg dose in the morning, and then took an additional two tablets around 10pm just before bed. I then noticed a mild bloating feeling (like I needed to burp) which has increased so much so I've got my friends number ready on my phone to take me to A&E... I was diagnosed with UC 2 years ago, but the doc who recently gave me the scope (and put me on Aza) says it's indeterminite colitis (colitis chrons) should I go A&E? I'm in pretty bad pain, I'd say 8/10... is this usual?

Can call your GI? If you are in bad pain, I would get checked, just to be sure.
I just started with Azathioprine a couple weeks ago
I too am having a rough time adjusting to Azathioprine. I suggest you go up very slowly. I am only jumping 50 mg per week and still having issues. This drug stinks in my opinion!

I would get it checked out if you're in that kind of pain. It gave me pancreatitis, very painful and was in the hospital for a week. It caused that at 50mg for me. Stuff is poison to me. For those it works for it's great, but when it causes complications it can be a very bad (and not worth it) thing! Hope you feel better!

Ok went to A& E last night, they took an x-ray and the doctor said looks fine, and that there is NO way the AZA caused this feeling. It was without a question of a doubt the most painful experience I've ever had. They gave me a drip and an anti spasmoid medication.

Don't know what to do, I have been in bed all day, and haven't taken any AZA, will call doc tomorrow...

It sounded like and allergic reaction to me so I went to webmd and this is what they have posted:

Although unlikely, more severe stomach/intestinal symptoms (e.g., severe nausea/vomiting/diarrhea, stomach/abdominal pain) may occur as part of a very serious allergic reaction. Seek immediate medical attention if you have severe stomach/intestinal symptoms or other symptoms of a serious allergic reaction which may include: fever, shaking chills, rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing, cough, new or worsening joint/muscle aches, dark urine.

What does the paperwork that came with your prescription say? I would definitely call your GI and let them know.

Be careful if it happens again!

yep I'll call him tomorrow - I live in England, and we don't have direct numbers to doctors, but have to go through their secretary/PAs... I didn't have any vomiting, although at times felt I wanted to vomit... I'm going to have 50mg now and see how it goes...

Three years ago, I was on 150 mg Aza and then switched to Imuran, the same dose, w/o telling me GI. I had the worst flare up ever w severe abdominal pain, d and fever. He couldn't figure out what was wrong and thought it was one of my normal flare ups. I too couldn't relate this to what I 've done.
Last year, when he decided to put me on Imuran, I resisted. He told me to start w a small dose as I needed to take it. We started off w 50 mg. After a month, when the blood work came out normal, he increased other 50 mgs w a total of 100 mg. Another month after, he upped the dose to 150 mgs. A month after, the dose was increased to 175 mg but I had a stomach flare up. So, he lowered the dose to 150 mg and I have been on this dose ever since.
IMO, upping the dose suddenly from 50 mg to 150 mg might have been the cause of your pain. I think you should do it gradually.

thanks, aren't AZA and imuran the same thing? how you doing on it?

The aza I got was generic one while the Imuran was the brand name.
