Pain after extracting a wisdom tooth - Help

I extracted yesterday a wisdom tooth. The dentist who is mainly a surgeon prescribed 2g of ceftriaxone (antibiotic) IV daily for 5 days. Immediately after the anesthetic wore off, severe pain hit. I was screaming out of this pain. So, I took a painkiller (NSAID) injection. In less than 4 hrs its effect wore off and pain started all over again. I was at my wits end. I called my GI and asked him what to do. He was shocked that the effect of the painkiller injection wore off that quickly. He said that based on such a rate I'm going to be needing an injection every 4 hrs which is not ok on either my stomach or Crohn's.
I took 2 injections yesterday and 1 in the morning and know I can't have more but pain is horrible.
Ten years ago when I extracted the other wisdom tooth, I had no problems. I don't know whether it's age (I'm in my thirties) or is it a matter of weakness now (I didn't have Crohn's then) but I can't bear this pain now. Any advice to control pain?
The good news is that the dental surgeon told me I have a dental cyst that necessitates an urgent surgery. I just I have to undergo some more cts to confirm it. All what I or either my stomach or Crohn's need at the time being.

I just had oral surgery a few days ago too, mouth pain can be really bad. It just seems funny to me that something as small as a tooth can create such big pain!! Sorry you are suffering so much! Have you tried ice or OTC numbing gel? What did the dental surgeon say about pain?

I don't know a lot about injections of pain medications, so this may be a dumb question, but why would it wear off so fast? And how do the injections affect your GI system-- doesn't an injection sort of bypass the GI tract? Again, I apologize for my lack of knowledge.

Hopefully, your dentist can figure out what's going on with the cyst and get it taken care of quickly to get rid of some of that pain! I know for me, adding this mouth pain and the meds that go with it, has just really made my "typical" GI problems really act up. Good luck and hope you feel better soon!

You should get oral Vicodin for the pain....it will help you D, not tear up your GI system and help with the pain. You should not be doing NSAID injections. I hope you feel better soon

@Sunny. NSAIDs can trigger a flare up no matter their route.
@ Gumby. I can't take anything via mouth. Either my lovely gastritis or duodenitis will flare up. I now ask my GI to prescribe injections as oral meds make me sick.

I would ask your GI about morphine injectionse for a few days. Sometimes a wisdom tooth extraction can be very painful. I had 2 impacted one removed and 2 that had already come in. The third day following extraction should be the worst. The downside of the crohns meds for me has been slower healing due to the fact that my immune system is low is less swelling which help the body heal

Jden18, thank you very much.Really the third day will be worse! He never gave me morphine injections and don't know what his reaction would be? My late dad used to take morphine inj for cancer but a wisdom tooth extraction, I don't know. I know that my GI will def object to that. Even my family members can't believe that it is causing such severe pain. Whenever they have a dental problem, they swallow OTC painkillers and that's it . They can't imagine that this might cause a flare up

I think it is pretty typical for a dentist or oral surgeon to prescribe narcotic pain relievers to last a few days following a surgery (I have never had dental surgery, but I know family members who have taken Vicodin or Percocet for a few days following wisdom teeth extraction). Are you from the states? Can you get a narcotic pain reliever in injection form? I would call your dentist and ask for something stronger, oral pain is the worst!

2 of the wisdom teeth that I had extracted hurt so bad I couldnt sleep or eat for 10 days. It is one of the worst pains I ever went through so I'm big time sympathizing with you. I hope it gets better soon :)

@Myrne. I'm not from the States. I took so far 4 painkiller injections. I hope pain subsides or else I don't know what do if pain persists.
@ Jden. Thank you very much for your sympathy. It never crossed my mind that extracting a tooth would be that painful. My sister had 3 extracted in the last couple of months and she did not suffer at all. It seems Crohn's is playing an important role here.

I've had a pain doctor tell me that people with chronic disease tend to have hyperactive pain sensors. Pain tends to last longer. I dont know about that for most people I know with crohns deal with so much pain on a regular basis that we deal with pain better than most. But pain is such a personal experience. Plus with yours they may have had to do more trauma to get them out. The longer the wisdom teeth stay impacted the harder they are to get out. Its why they recommend them to be taken out in our teens.

I have found that my pain has lasted longer than expected on certain things like having my gallbladder removed. They told me I would only have pain for 5-7 days and my pain lasted two and a half weeks.

I also had the nerves burned in my back and the recovery time was 10 days for most people and mine lasted 3 weeks every time I've had it done

It could be that crohns has something to do with it or possibly the meds we all take for the ground

Agree w you. I can tolerate Crohn's pain very well. Maybe I got used to it but when it comes to something different, my tolerance of pain is very low. Healing too takes longer time when compared to other people.
The dentist prescribed a mouthwash that I have to use 3 times/day. I feel that it increases pain instead of controlling it.

Is it a pain mouth wash or a cleansing wash. If its a cleansing wash then thats important. The last thing you want is an infection cause that will hurt even more. The cleansing wash may hurt a bit just like mouthwash burns a bit

I took my third painkiller injection for today as I couldn't bear it anymore. Now, I've taken 5 NSAID injections so far. Pray for me they do not trigger either a stomach or a Crohn's flare up.

I dont think a few nsaids are going to cause you to flare up now thats just my opinion I dont know everything about your case specifically but I know my GI said a few here and there would be fine, and as an injection it is probably bypassing your stomach so that should be spared.
You be almost through the worst if by now so I hope you start getting better fast :)

Mouth pain ranks up there as one of the worst--if not THE worst--types of pain. I had a root canal in 2012 that took 18 months to heal completely and the early pain was so bad that I just wanted to cry all the time. That on top of GI issues? Ugh.

So sorry you're dealing with this Minnie. I hope the pain fades fast and you get some relief. I know my wisdom teeth started to feel much better within a week (maybe less, it's been about a decade).

you may find.... this helps having that bad tooth removed... a direct Path for bacteria into your blood and gut...systems

Minnie - has anyone mentioned "dry sockets" to you?  I know when my sis had her wisdom teeth removed, she was in excruciating pain due to dry sockets.  My wisdom teeth fell apart while being extracted so I don't know all about this.  Just thought you might want to bring up the psosibility with the dentist.

I'm so sorry you're so sick with this on top of everything else. When it rains....

Habs and I have the same idea--dry sockets. When you have this much pain, dry sockets should be suspect. I had my wisdom teeth removed years ago and though it was tough, it wasn't like what you're dealing with. Ask your oral surgeon about this.

It really sounds like you could benefit from a narcotic medicine as it hits acute pain far better than an NSAID. NSAIDs do well with inflammatory type pain, but I've never been able to get much pain relief from NSAIDs in comparison to narcotics and there are narcotic shots besides morphine. I don't have problems with oral narcotics and actually get the benefit of it slowing my GI tract down though you can have nausea if it's a strong dosage.

I'm thinking NSAIDs, whether via GI tract or injection, can kick up CD. It's what it does on the cellular level throughout the system, I believe, that causes this. Something to do with prostaglandins. Some NSAIDs are worse than others and we all may react differently to them. I can tolerate small amounts of ibuprofen but not the others. Both aspirin and ibuprofen to a lesser degree cause profuse bleeding in me--something that's not helpful with tooth extraction.

You want to make sure youre rinsing well too. Did they give you something that looked like a long eyedropper? Some of my pain was due to food getting stuck in the sockets. If they didnt give you an eyedropper then I would go to the pharmacy and ask for a medicine dropper and use it to flush the hole. Make sure you really press down on the plunger you want high pressure to clean it out properly and I'll be a third to agree on dry sockets. The cure for dry socket is just them cleaning it out and the dentist packs it up with gauze and your pain should be way better. Very easy follow up procedure and is really quite common I would call your dentist.

Great point Habs and JaSanne. I had dry sockets when mine were removed and had the teeth packed with something (it wasn't just straight up cotton) for several days. I remember that helping a lot...although I don't still don't think mine hurt as much as you're describing.

Dear all, thank you very much. I really appreciate it. Yesterday, the pain was unbearable. I took 2 painkiller injections. Today, I think that the pain is subsiding; at least I haven't taken any painkillers yet.
The antibiotic injections make me dizzy all the time and sometimes I faint. I took a sick leave from work. I can hardly stand up.
My main concern is the dental cyst. After going through 3 nightmarish days of excruciating pain, I can't dare and undergo an oral surgery. The more time goes w our standing dd, the more timid I become. Now, I began to fear any medical procedure. I don't know what happened to me.
