The improvement was obvious in just a day or two. I have experimented a little and found out that certain foods on the fodmap list are much more troublesome for me than others, for example, onions are a big problem while broccoli is not. You could give the diet a shot for a week and if it helps try introducing some of the foods back and see what happens. There is a test called an ELISA test that can identify foods intolerances. The test was helpful for me, it measures IGG antibodies the body produces as a response to some foods. Some question the value of these tests, but I'm sold and so is my allergist. You can get the test through a naturopath. The downside, like you mentioned, is a very restricted diet. Good luck, hope you feel better!
I guess I could try it out for a month and see what happens. While it is a pain it at least has the benefit of eliminating nearly every potential problem food and then I could reintroduce things and see how it goes.
Regarding the ELISA test, I've read that FODMAP foods only cause GI distress/bloating/gas but are not a result of an allergic reaction or an autoimmune reaction? That's what the source I was reading said at least.

I too am big into weight lifting, try to follow a similar diet, and also have similar symptoms. A typical diet for me per day is 6 egg whites, pre-workout shakes, protein shakes, pound of chicken, white rice, and whatever else. Generally whenever I eat I have constant growling in my intestines and when I flare I have terrible bloating/gas. Prior to my last flare (which I am currently in) I had great luck supplementing with a quality probiotic (garden of life probiotics). These probiotics cut down on the stomach noises by about 80%, which made life much easier. I am currently in a flare so it seems everything causes bloating and gas. Like you I have found that eliminating gluten, dairy, or introducing a FODMAP diet had no improvement in my symptoms. For me the only thing that helps me in a bad flare is Prednisone and hopefully Remicade which I just restarted.
Yup that does sound similar to me. Honestly I would not expect the FODMAP diet to be that helpful in a flare, the only thing that worked for me was the rowasa enema and I may have to go on 6-MP as the next step.
But I think the FODMAP diet
may help with the gas/bloating. So you did a full/struct FODMAP diet and had no improvement even regarding the gas and bloating aspect?
I have tried VSL#3 probiotics before and they didn't seem to help me. But then again I think when I was evaluating the effectiveness of them I was going by how my cramps were and if my stomach hurt, not by the amount of gas I was having. So maybe I just wasn't thinking about
it and the probiotics may have helped with the gas. I could try them again and see if there is any improvements, although I'm not overly hopeful for them based on previous experience.
