Calf pain: electrolyte imbalance or inflammation?

I don't know, but if you think it's possible that you are dehydrated you need lots of fluids, not just the potassium from bananas. If you don't think it's dehydration, then maybe your primary care doc can run some bloodwork and see if you are deficient in anything. An orthopedist is for bones, which doesn't seem all that relevant.

I agree with Gumby- if you are dehydrated you need fluids with electrolytes, like Gatorade, coconut water, or Smart Water. Calf cramps can definitively be a side effect of dehydration and can be quite painful.

Elyte and Thorne lemon-lyme (whatever it's called) are two nice alternative eloctrolyte sugar-free drinks you can mix up yourself. they are very different in nature, but if electrolytes are your problem, you should know soon enough by taking in some electrolytes.

I started having this symptom back in 2010. I began a bad flare up and landed in the hospital eventually with C-diff. No problem then that I remember but I didn't completely get well and 4 months later ended up back in the hospital. The calf pain began, I believe, as a result of all the illness, fluid loss etc after struggling for so many months with the flare up/stress. It was unnerving to have them tell me they had no clue what it was but they did ultrasound to rule out clots or other problems. I did my own research and decided it had to be nutrition-related. I began supplementing magnesium, calcium and potassium. I will get very crampy in the muscles if I stop for too many days. I use a magnesium gel since it can cause diarrhea, but I do take a pill as well. Potassium can be easily found in food but the supplements are very low dose to keep people from over doing it. Soaking in epsom salt is another way to increase magnesium. I just don't have time for that very often.
