about a year ago I was transitioned within my company to a new boss but job stayed the same..no real issues. Then I was moved from that boss with half of his team to someone new that did nothing that we did..with me so far? Fast forward to now and we have gone thru major changes. We were just notified yesterday by meeting 13 positions were eliminated where I work and some how some way I am spared and being moved yet again to another manager within the same dept..but..job is completely changing...so it is like I got a whole new job that I never would have thought of applying for. But counting my blessings job and insurance is intact. Now I am just kind of dealing with the stress of the idea of having this disease with a new boss. My old boss was a friend so when I was diagnosed I told her right away and it never really affected my work (I am blessed to work from home) but she knew if I had to jump away from a meeting really fast..this was why..no issues. I am a little intimated by having a new boss that honestly I will not be sharing this information with.
Typically my crohns and work has never been an issue. I work thru the pain and deal with it..but lately I have been shown the true reality of the disease and how it can laugh its evil little head off at you while you make plans for the day..so some nerves there. I called out for the first time in sixteen years a few weeks ago and frankly had almost panic attacks about it all day. But I know the reality is..it can and will happen.
So anyway, just my ramble for the day that I am thankful they saw something in me worth keeping from my previous job reviews, sad for the people that now have to reapply for jobs and nervous all at the same time about learning a new job and dealing with this disease. Anyone with tips, experience feel free to offer any advice. It is always welcome!

tewcute, I was laid off a few months ago. I had just been diagnosed with CD and had many symptoms. I had very difficulty in working and finally gave up. I later educated myself about CD while I was unemployed. I applied to the jobs at the same time. Of course, travelling to the interview location was stressful. I somehow managed to get a job. I started the diet and put all the knowledge that I had gained to practice. I'm doing a lot better now. In the meantime, I attended an interview at a company, to which I had submitted my application long back. I cleared the first interview and have been invited to the second interview next Monday. They're offering me better salary package and long term employment.

Conclusion: There're a lot of better jobs. Never be afraid of losing your job. Should you be laid off, prepare yourself well for a better opportunity. It takes some hard work, but in the end you'll be rewarded.

I am self employed, but I added an extra 16 hour/week job at my local hospital a couple of months before I got sick with my latest obstruction and surgery. The new job entailed a lot more than 16 hours as I was being trained and I was working 45-50 hours/week. I have no idea if the stress of all the extra work triggered my latest flare, or if it was a coincidence. But I ended out resigning from the hospital job. I was pretty sure they couldn't fire me based on my health, but it felt unfair to them to make them wait a month or more for me to come back when they just hired me. I also am wondering if my 55 yr. old crohnnie body just can't work full time anymore. I was very disappointed, but I think I made the right choice. My employer seemed relieved and they are interested in having me be a back up person when I am feeling better.

Try not to get too stressed about the new boss. You can give info on a "need to know" basis. Other "normal" people step out of meetings to use the restroom. You may get by and become highly valued before you need to share that you have Crohn's, if ever. But if you do need to tell your new boss, remember that you don't have any idea what chronic diseases may be ailing your boss or fellow co-workers. I hope it all goes well for you!
