The day before memorial day I ended up in the hospital. They thought it was a TIA, then they were not sure because all my tests were normal. But then after discharge I got worse so my husband took me to a different hospital, they gave me 4 different diagnoses. I left there confused. they took me off all my meds, Pentasa, beta blocker, immodium, vit d calcium, multi vitamin. I went home I felt so bad. They never figured it out but they are treating me for seizures. I googled immodium. this is two of many sites

Immodium is dangerous. My dr told me it was ok to take it, I was taking between 5-15 a day.

I am completely off immodium, I now only take probiotics, they are live probiotics. I feel so much better. I am not bloated, my diaherra is getting less and less, But my withdrawal from imodium was horrible, I am not over the headaches, My speech is back, and I can sleep, I quit having night sweats. I had so many of the symptoms, it also causes abdominal pain and diaherra :( which I had

Hey there sorry to hear about all the mess you been through, I just wanted to know if it is okay to take it once in a while. I just bought the multi-symptom Imodium and I plan to take it while I go on a vacation where there will be less bathrooms around. I get real bad urgency when i know there are no bathrooms around. Will Imodium help in this case?

Yes engineer, you should be ok to take Immodium occasionally. It isn't a good drug to use to try to control Crohn's, but you can take it once in awhile. Dusty was taking 5-15 pills a day.

Once in awhile is ok, like gumby44 said but what happened with me was I started with one when that stopped working I moved to two. Then three, pretty soon I was using 100 in a 7 day week. My dr said ok. But like I said I googled it. People have died for overdosing on immodium, I know I had a hard time stopping. My incentive was on most sites I noticed it causes cardiac issues. I already have a heart condition. It is tempting though because it does control the symptoms of chrons, most of the time. I wont say it will happen to everyone but I know what happened to me, I feel I almost died. I was in the hospital 2 weeks. I have yet to go back to work, I am so tired all the time from the seizure meds, not sure if those are the residual effects of the immoium, BUT PLEASE USE IT WITH CAUTION, its not as safe as they say

new to the forums but not to the disease
dx in 1995, 1st resection in 2007 - failed - active crohn's appeared within 5 months, 2nd resection in 2012, failed again - active disease at 6 month check. i have tried all meds that my GI and my U of Chicago specialist have thrown at me and gluten/dairy free and acupuncture and chiropractic care. I have horrible reactions to meds or they don't do anything. 20 years of this and I have never had an exam that ended with "in remission" as my dx. Currently on Humera (10th set of injections) they are done every 15 days. Seemed to be working in the the first month but then once the starter doses (4x40mg day 1 and 3x40mg 15 days later) were done and I was on only one 40mg every 15days my symptoms returned. at the 5th dose we added a 2nd 40mg injection of Humera, this seems to be controlling the pain of the crohn's but not the sour stomach, run like hockey sticks to the bathroom and Pray you make it D that seems to continue to control my life. I have done the Questramine powder (sp?), it causes a Roller coaster between C&D, Immodium started with 1 daily up to now 5 daily, still riding a roller coaster. I have tried drinking shots of apple cider vinegar, drinking lemon ginger tea all day long, nothing seems to give me a "norm". I have pulled my car over and ran into the snow, the corn, the gas stations I just need/want the D to slow down. The articles I have read about Immodium freak me out, it's addictive to our bodies and causes big problems, so please if you have any ideas, I'm listening. BTW I have no ileocecal valve, each resection took 12"+ of my large and small. Next colonoscopy is in 6months if I can stay pain free.

Positive note for those who might need one, best year I had was on Remicade infusions, until I had an allergic reaction and showed signs of drug induced RA so they pulled me from it. Before that and since they nothing longer than a few months of symptom free.

bigrowrow, I feel for you, I was so bad that I would be standing somewhere and my bowels would move no reason. When I ended up in the hospital and they removed me from my chrons meds I was in panic, no more Imodium, pentasa. at first it was horrible and the pain was bad. But this is what I did and I will continue to do, now it is not 100%, and its what works for me. I am only on probiotics I get the live cultures the highest they sell here is 100 billion, refrigerated I found a safe point to stop eating I do not over eat, I also watch what I eat and I eat NO fast foods. I also take my probiotic with plenty of water. I am not better by no means but I feel like I have a handle on my disease, I am in somewhat control. BUT PLEASE AS I SAID WATCH YOU IMMODIUM, read up on it. I think I almost died it was awful, I still blame my seizures on the immodium only because TIA is a small stroke, on the one site it says could cause cardiac events seizures can happen after a stroke. The temptation is so bad to go back on the Imodium I threw it all away. I Do you have a good gastro dr????

I stopped taking Imodium when I became very nauseated and very dizzy, the room was spinning around. I only took two of the pills. Thank God I did not follow the surgeon's advice, he said you can take as many as eight pills at day!!

I know my dr said 20 a day not a problem, but google it its dangerous. They really need to post it on the box, under precautions. I am just now getting my life back, just use caution when using Imodium :(

Hi,

I think it depends on the individual.  I have taken 2 Imodium everyday since 1988, and I am fine.  The only time I stopped it for a week at a time was for my three bowel resections.  I also take 3 buscopan everyday.  Without these two meds, I couldn't leave the house.  I take only the regular Imodium not the multi-symptom one as my pharmacist said that one could cause me problems.

Try to quit it, see that's the problem. Imodium has addictive qualities. I can only say what happened to me. I started in 1994, I took 1 a day then one quit working so I up it to two then three, like you I could not leave the house without it. I don't know how your problems started mine started with the diaherra after I ate, then it escalated. I quit the Imodium. I quit everything I still have issues I wont say I don't but I dont eat more than my stomach can handle, I watch what I eat and I take probiotics. I cant go places without worrying but I refuse to let that medication back in my body. If it works for u I am happy for you, But for me I googled it I no what I went through, I am only warning people. I had cardiac as well as brain issues, I still have some issues but my heart quit skipping beats and my headaches are gone, and I have a lot more energy.

I've taken them for probably 15 years now, no problems. I've also quit taking them without a problem. I do agree that it's individual, like everything else. To be honest dusty sounds like you have some additional health problems going on too. You also seem against all medication right now, which is your choice. But Crohn's left to fester can have it's own devastating consequences. Good luck to you.

I will need it but yesterday was the first time since 1993 I went away from my house and did not get sick :) , and I had no other issues other than the amount of Imodium I had used. I still fill it as the Imodium that caused my issues. I like I said was up to 5-15 a day. I googled it please research and use it with caution its like putting a bandaide on chrons. I was out of control with my usage, and the dr had no problem with it :(

My GI said i could take 4 imodium every 6 hours. I take it every day but still have severe diarreha.. 2 months ago my Gi prescribe codiene tablets. They have helped more than anything in the past 12 years.

I know what Imodium did to me, I will not take it again, be careful using it. My dr told me the same thing don't worry it will not hurt you, what happened to me was not fun. Google Imodium addiction. the more you take the more you need.
