I was wondering if it is in fact a flare that makes this happen or if certain foods can cause it.  I have noticed that even in times of remission (not sure if it 100% remission though) I have even had BMs with mucous.  Today I  am hav ing urges to go and it is all stringy therefore I presume that is what it is since I have not eaten anything of that texture.  Is there a way to help prevent that I tend to seem more crampy when there is mucous in my stool as opposed to not.  I do also have my period and wonder if the issues could be linked since I do tend to flare a little around that time...signs will definitly tell tuesday when I have my scope just hope I wont be too out of it when the GI informs me of his findings after I wake up.

Could you have inflammation in the rectum? I do, and when I see mucous it is time to use my mesalamine enema.

I've found that overconsumption of dairy products can cause mucus-y stool, like eating a large ice cream or drinking too much milk. I've also read that some people experience "diarrhea" as a symptom of PMS...could definitely be related.

Or, as Kazbern suggested, it could be inflammation in the rectum...maybe not a huge flare but enough to cause the mucus.

Since my surgeries I do now suffer from CD skin tags and my last scope back in oct of 08 there was disease in both my small and large intestine. Guess if there is a need for the enemas the doc will know with the scope I am having tues

My gyno put me on just the active pills so I can skip my periods, and that has helped me avoid the time-of-the-month flare ups.

I do get some mucous in my stools every once in a while even when I'm not in a flare.

I am in remission right now and get mucous sometimes too. I don't think its too much to worry about. Sounds like things are a little irritated becuz of the time of the month. I always was miserable then. Good luck!

I have muscus everday, it is part of cd, that's what determines if you have active cd, that's what my gi has told me. mucus comes out of me after I've had a couple of loose bm's in am then a few bile movements then mucus is generally the last of bm's of the day.(hopefully). I'm a dude, so definalty not that time of month for me

I have. Mucus everyday. When I pass gas, mucus comes out. Sometimes when I feel I have to have a BM all I have is what I call pus balls that are the size of a quarter. Sometimes they have blood in them. I notice when I have blood in them I feel really cramps. There is no stool just these pus balls. Other times the first part of the stool is all white with mucus and sometimes the whole stool is covered in what looks like a white cloud.
My Dr told me not to worry about this. I don't think this looks normal.
Had a colonoscopy show inflammation in rectum. But he said not UC or Crohns. Has a fistula a couple years ago with seton. That has since been removed.
Is all this pus normal like Dr says.

jury2...some mucus is normal, but what you are describing does not sound normal. I think you should consider getting a second opinion from another GI, especially with your history of a fistula as well.

Thanks for the reply gumby44. This is my third Dr. the first doctor said it was Crohns then he changed his mind and said it was ulcerative colitis then he said he really did not know what was wrong with me . I had been having lots of blood in my stool, so much that he kept me in the hospital for a week.
He sent me to this specialist at Mayo who told me he didn't see any sign of Crohns or UC. Even though I was having 5 to 7 bm's a day. He wanted to treat me for how to control my bowels. I told him I didn't have a problem controlling. My bowels. I just need to go when I need to go. I stopped going there because they were not addressing my problem with the excessive mucus and the number of bloody stools.
The Dr I see now was recommended by the Crohns and Colitis Foundation. He has given me Paxil now to help calm my nerves in my rectum. I still have bloody stools, cramps on left side, copious amounts of muscus and go to bathroom 5 to 7 times a day. My stomach feels bloated. Yet, this Dr keeps telling me we don't have to worry about the muscus.
