Positive ANA Test - Can it be Crohn's or Humira?

Does anyone know whether Crohn's itself can cause positive ANA (1:160 titer)? Every website says positive ANA is either SLE or other connective tissue disease (or infection) but never seen Crohn's on the list.  Plus, wouldn't they test for ANA to diagnose Crohn's if it can cause it?  Also, what about Humira? I've read that 12% of Humira users tested positive, but it didn't indicate the level.

Well I know Remicade can cause a positive ANA test.

But you can also have a positive ANA with out there begin anything wrong with you.

I have a positive ANA and my doc suspects Lupus.

Hi NY-CD,

Just curious if you have any symptoms that go along with a high ANA. Hopefully your doc will run other tests to try and narrow down why your ANA is high and what you might have.

You may already be aware of this, but under "Warnings and Precautions" in the full prescribing info for Humira, it says if a lupus-like syndrome develops then Humira should be stopped.

What does your GI say about all this?

How do you feel?
Because the lupus like syndrome will eventually make you feel it.
Like walking thru chest deep snow after having your feet beaten.

Hi, ANA stands for antinuclear antibody test. This test indicates that you probably have an autoimmune disease,
but more specifically Lupus...
With your ANA Titer levels being high, your doctor really should take you off Humira. As Navy says this drug can
cause lupus like syndrome, and when you're taken off the drug, your blood work may return to normal, in my case
it did not...
You could also ask the doctor to do a DNA test for lupus, this may help clarify the situation. Good luck.

Sorry Blossom it was you who said about the Humira warning. Although Navy is right with the symptom thing, when it hits
it hits hard.
NY-CD, do you know what ANA titer levels are?

My ANA test was positive, when I had it done years ago, but they said it really didn't tell them anything because it could be RA or it could be from my thyroid disease.  So, positive ANA does not necessary indicate lupus more than any other auto immune disease.  They've never really worried about mine because I have too many things for them to know what is really causing it to be positive.

Im very interested in what your saying here about thyroid...Ive been hypothyroid for about 16 years, but it was doing ok on meds till menopause...then up and down. Recently I had my ANA tested and it was 1:320 homogenous and fine speckle pattern...GP called lupus pretty quick, but my symptoms are really mild...could be thyroid stuff, menopause stuff, or other stuff...I keep mentioning my thyroid might be making high ANA, but he says nope thyroid doesn't show in the ANA test...I wrote to a professor in the UK that deals with thyroid and other stuff, and he also assured me that thyroid doesn't mess with the ANA test...
I was checking here in Crohns connection, because I have a friend with bad Crohns right now (she has tons of stress)...
I love to hear back, because I learn more, and can go armed to the rhumetologist...I HATE MEDS and im on plaquinil...
